Dwarf Pink Ixora (Ixora 'Dwarf Pink') is a very pretty little tropical shrub that stays 50cm tall and 30cm wide. Clusters of warm pink flowers, in shades that vary from bloom to bloom, appear through spring and summer above glossy, vivid green leaves. It suits driveway borders, stepover hedges and containers on a deck.
Why you'll love it
-
Warm, shaded pinks. Each cluster carries several tones of pink, which gives the plant depth that a single flat colour lacks.
-
Generous with flowers. It blooms freely in spring and summer, and regular pruning sets up the next season's display.
-
Neat and rounded. The compact habit stays tidy with little work, so it suits the front of a bed.
-
Good in containers. Baskets, pots and deck planters all suit it, where the colour can be enjoyed up close.
-
Easy to pair. Planted in front of the taller Pink Malay Ixora, it makes a two-level pink bed.
Where it works best
Driveway borders. A row planted 30cm apart makes a low, colourful edge against paving or lawn.
Stepover hedging and mass planting. At 30cm apart the plants merge into a dense, flowering mass about 50cm high.
Baskets and patio pots. Grow it in a 30cm container or a hanging basket where it gets bright light, and keep it moist.
Growing Dwarf Pink Ixora in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is a tropical plant, so it thrives in humid, frost free gardens and needs protection from frost. In cooler regions, grow it in a pot and give it shelter in winter.
Soil. Well drained soil, kept on the acid side. Alkaline soil turns the leaves yellow.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, which usually takes around 12 weeks, and give it plenty of water in dry periods. If the leaves yellow after a dry spell, feed with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote a dense habit and plenty of blooms in the next flowering season. A light trim each year is enough.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Dwarf Pink Ixora as tube stock: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly once it goes into warm, well-drained soil. Tubes are the economical way to plant a long border.
The tube is supplied by our grower, so stock comes and goes. If it shows as sold out when you visit, press the notify button on the page and we will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Does it flower all year?
No. The main show is spring and summer. Pruning after flowering and watering well through dry spells gives you the fullest display.
How often should I prune it?
Once a year, straight after flowering, is enough. Cutting back lightly keeps the shrub dense and sets up the next round of flowers.
Can it live indoors?
In a cool region it can be grown as a houseplant, as long as it sits in very bright light. Otherwise keep it outside in a warm, sheltered spot.
