Bedspread Grevillea (Grevillea 'Bedspread') is a fast-growing native groundcover that rolls out like its name: 30cm to 40cm tall and 2m to 3m wide, with toothed, holly-like leaves and long pink-red toothbrush flowers in spring and autumn. It tolerates frost to about -6C and salt spray, holds banks together and shelters wildlife.
Why you'll love it
-
Fast cover. It spreads quickly, so bare ground and weedy banks fill in sooner.
-
Frost and salt tough. It tolerates frost to about -6C and salt spray, which suits cold inland gardens and exposed coastal ones.
-
Long, dark flowers. The pink-red toothbrush flowers are longer and darker than those of its parent Royal Mantle, and appear in spring and autumn.
-
Holds ground. It retains soil and moisture, suppresses weeds and keeps the roots of larger plants cool in summer or warm in winter.
-
Good for wildlife. It provides nectar and shelter, which makes it a useful addition to a wildlife garden.
Where it works best
Banks and slopes. Plant 1.5m apart across the slope. The stems knit together, hold the soil and stop weeds from taking hold.
Under shrubs and trees. A living mulch that keeps the roots of larger plants cool in summer and warm in winter. Plant it in full sun to part shade.
Coastal and exposed gardens. It takes salt spray, so it suits seaside gardens and wind-exposed borders where other groundcovers burn.
Growing Bedspread Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the best flowering, but it will grow in part shade. It tolerates frost to about -6C and salt spray, so it suits cool temperate, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens.
Soil. Well-drained clay loam or sandy soil, with a neutral to acid pH.
Water and feed. Water during the first 8 to 12 weeks, until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas can be sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to keep it neat and dense.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Bedspread Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 300mm pots, sold singly. Tubes are the economical choice for covering a large bank, and the 300mm pots give a fuller start where you want cover sooner. Groundcover grevilleas are popular, so a tube that shows as sold out may take a while to return.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
