Small spaces punish clutter and reward nerve. The instinct in a courtyard is to buy lots of small plants; the result is a cluttered balcony. The designer's move is the opposite: one bold tree, two or three foliage shapes, repeated: and suddenly ten square metres reads like a boutique hotel lightwell.
The idea
Courtyards are really rooms. They need a ceiling (the canopy), walls (green screening or the fences you soften), and a floor (groundcover, not bare pavers to the edge). Because you see a courtyard up close every single day, foliage quality matters more than flowers, this palette is built on leaf shape and shade tolerance.
The palette
The ceiling: Japanese Maple. One. In the corner that gets afternoon protection. Fine layered foliage, sculptural winter silhouette, and the single most reliable way to make a small space feel considered. In frost-free tropical courtyards, swap it for a golden cane palm in the pack below.
The mid-storey: Philodendron Xanadu and Bird's Nest Fern. Two leaf shapes that flatter each other, deeply-cut lobes against glossy shuttlecock rosettes. Both thrive in the bright shade courtyards actually get.
The reliable colour: Clivia. Eight, massed in the darkest bed. Architectural straps all year, then orange trumpets in late winter when you most need them.
The soft edges: Star Jasmine on the fence, Dwarf Mondo between pavers. The jasmine turns the ugliest wall into a scented green panel; the mondo erases the hard line where paving meets soil, which is precisely the line that makes small spaces feel small.
How to plant it
Beds beat pots, even a 40 cm-wide in-ground bed against a wall grows lusher, easier plants than any container. Position the maple first, screen the worst fence panel with jasmine on simple wires, then mass the understorey. Nine plants of three kinds beats twenty of ten, every time.
