Subtropical Plants for Warm Climates
Live plants delivered Australia wide. 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
Subtropical gardens get the best of both worlds, humid warm summers and mild winters, and this collection gathers more than 150 plants proven in exactly those conditions. Azaleas make up the biggest block, flanked by tibouchinas, olives, citrus, cordylines, star jasmine and a run of tough succulents. If you garden anywhere from the central Queensland coast down through Brisbane and northern New South Wales, or in a warm frost free pocket further south, start here. The guide below the grid sorts the range by job.

More information
What subtropical means for plant choice
The subtropics, roughly the coastal strip from central Queensland through Brisbane to the New South Wales north coast, hand a gardener humid summers with most of the year's rain, and mild winters where frost is rare near the coast and light further inland. Plants here are chosen for that pattern. They take humidity without collapsing into fungal problems, and they flower or fruit without needing the deep winter cold that some southern favourites rely on. If your climate fits that description, everything in the grid is a reasonable candidate rather than a gamble.
The azalea block: colour through the cooler months
Azaleas dominate this collection for a good reason: few shrubs flower as heavily through a subtropical winter and spring. The indica types such as 'Alphonse Anderson', 'Magnifica' and 'Alba Magnifica' grow to 1.5m or more and take more sun than most people expect. The kurume types stay compact, usually under 1m, and suit pots and low borders. The Autumn series repeat flower across autumn, winter and spring rather than in one flush. All of them want the same things: morning sun with afternoon shade, acidic soil around pH 5 to 6, and mulch over their shallow roots instead of cultivation around them.
Flowering shrubs with subtropical credentials
Tibouchinas are the signature purple of Brisbane autumns. 'Alstonville' makes a small tree of 3m to 4m covered in violet flowers, while compact forms like 'Jules' and 'Little Beauty' hold the same colour at about 1m. Around them sit bougainvilleas and dipladenias for hot walls and fences, brunfelsia for scent, and cordylines for year round foliage colour where flowers come and go.
Productive plants for warm climates
The citrus range is the easy win: Eureka and Meyer lemons, limes and kumquats all crop generously in subtropical backyards. Avocado 'Reed' and the green tea plant extend the harvest. The olive trees, including Manzanillo and the ornamental Swan Hill, grow into handsome silver canopies anywhere warm, though they set their heaviest crops in drier climates with colder winters, so on the humid coast treat fruit as a bonus rather than the point.
Planting and care in a humid climate
Autumn and spring are the ideal planting windows, giving roots two mild seasons before the first hard summer. Humidity is the main management issue, so give shrubs airflow rather than cramming them, water the soil rather than the foliage, and mulch 75mm deep. Feed azaleas with an azalea and camellia fertiliser straight after flowering, and give tibouchinas a light prune at the same point in their cycle to keep them dense. Succulents and echeverias want the opposite treatment: a raised bed, an unwatered corner or a pot on a hot step where summer rain drains away instantly.
Common questions
I garden in Sydney, Perth or Adelaide. Is this collection for me?
Mostly yes. Warm temperate gardens overlap heavily with the subtropics, and azaleas, tibouchinas, citrus, olives and star jasmine perform in all of them. The main check is frost: cordyline fruticosa forms, dipladenias and other soft tropicals need a protected spot once frost enters the picture.
Can azaleas really handle Queensland sun?
Indica varieties take a surprising amount, especially with deep mulch and steady moisture. The safest position anywhere in the subtropics is morning sun and afternoon shade, which keeps flowers lasting longer too.
Which of these plants shrug off light frost?
Azaleas, 'Alstonville' tibouchina, olives, citrus (with young trees covered on the coldest nights), magnolias and star jasmine all cope with the light frosts of the subtropical hinterland. The succulents handle frost poorly when wet, so keep them dry through winter.
How is this different from the tropical collection?
The tropical garden plants are matched to the true tropics and lean on palms, heliconias and big foliage. This collection is calibrated for the milder band just south of that, where azaleas and olives succeed and a light frost is possible but not routine. Plenty of gardens can draw from both.
What about the succulents in this range?
Echeverias, aloes and crassulas earn their spot as the no water answer for hot paving, retaining walls and pots. Give them full sun and sharp drainage, and browse the full succulent collection if that corner of your garden is bigger than a pot or two.
