Yellow Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Yellow Star') is an evergreen, self-twining climber that also works as a low groundcover. Highly perfumed, soft yellow, windmill-shaped flowers open in spring and summer against dark green leaves with bronze new growth. Unclipped it reaches 1m to 2m, and it is less vigorous than the white-flowered form, so it suits a smaller trellis or arbour.
Why you'll love it
-
Highly perfumed flowers. Pastel yellow starry flowers fill the air with scent through spring and summer.
-
Bronze new growth. Young leaves flush bronze against the dark green older foliage, so the plant looks good outside flowering.
-
Versatile habit. Train it as a climber, let it spread as a groundcover or clip it to a low hedge.
-
Less vigorous than white star jasmine. It is easier to manage and better scaled for a small trellis or arbour.
-
Reputedly possum resistant. It is said to be possum-proof, which is a useful bonus where possums chew garden plants.
Where it works best
Trellis, arbour and wall. Give it a sturdy trellis and it winds upward on its own, scenting the doorway or seat it frames.
Groundcover. Plant 1m apart and let it spread. Prune regularly when young to thicken the cover.
Low hedges. Clipped regularly it forms a neat low hedge, best supported by a frame or wire as it establishes.
Growing Yellow Star Jasmine in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun is ideal, though it tolerates most positions. Frost free gardens suit it best. Established plants take a light frost, but the growth can be burnt, so in colder districts give it a sheltered wall.
Soil. Well-drained soil. It tolerates most conditions but benefits from mulch and fertiliser worked in at planting time.
Water and feed. Mulch and keep it watered until it is established. After that it needs little attention beyond the occasional drink in a dry spell.
Pruning. Prune regularly when the plant is young to promote bushy growth. The milky sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when trimming.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Yellow Star Jasmine as tube stock and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tube stock is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly and is the economical way to cover a trellis or bank. The 140mm pots give a planting more presence in its first year. Expect steady growth through the warmer months.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
