Variegated Tanika Lomandra (Lomandra longifolia) is Ozbreed's variegated form of the popular fine leaf Tanika Lomandra, with the same tough nature and a strong colour contrast. It makes a soft, evergreen, compact tussock 500mm to 600mm high and 650mm wide, with small yellow flowers from April to October. It has a decade of performance in Australian landscapes behind it.
Why you'll love it
-
Colour contrast. The variegated leaves stand out beside plain green plants and give a bed a strong point of contrast.
-
Tough like the original. It tolerates frost and drought, and gets by with little water or attention.
-
Soft to touch. Fine, soft leaves make it a good choice for family gardens where children brush past.
-
Compact and evergreen. An improved, compact fine leaf form that holds its shape all year.
-
Long flowering season. Small yellow flowers appear from April to October.
Where it works best
Borders and specimen planting. A single clump or a short row, 50cm apart, makes a clear accent where you want colour contrast.
Mass planting. Plant 50cm apart, about four plants per square metre (Ozbreed's range is three to six) for a lively, light coloured drift.
Slopes and dry areas. Ozbreed says it is ideal for drought tolerance on slopes and dryland areas.
Growing Variegated Tanika Lomandra in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to moderate shade. It tolerates frost and drought. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland, in Queensland only in non humid regions such as Toowoomba, with free draining soil.
Soil. Sandy, sandy loam and clay soils all suit it, but avoid wet feet. Ozbreed does not recommend it for low lying areas from Sydney north, where phytophthora is more common, and suggests Shara and Evergreen Baby lomandras, which are phytophthora resistant, for those spots.
Water and feed. Water as required for 8 to 13 weeks until established. Plant into a well mulched garden, using chunky mulch if you can, and keep the crown at or above soil or mulch level. If required, apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Every three to ten years, if required, cut back to 15cm above the ground. It looks better with a cut about every three years, depending on how tidy you want it.
