Summer Sunset Variegated Asiatic Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Summer Sunset') is an evergreen groundcover or climber in citrus colours, with oval leaves in gold, lemon and orange on long, trailing, twining stems. It stays only 15cm to 30cm high but spreads 1m to 3m wide, and carries small, fragrant white flowers through the warmer months.
Why you'll love it
-
Citrus coloured foliage. Rich golds, lemons and oranges colour the leaves, which gives beds and borders a lift all year.
-
A wide, low carpet. At 15cm to 30cm high and 1m to 3m wide it covers a lot of ground without growing tall.
-
Fragrant flowers. Small white flowers open through the warmer months and scent the air.
-
More cold tolerant. As an Asiatic star jasmine it is more cold tolerant than Tricolour star jasmine, and it tolerates temperatures down to about -5C.
-
Two uses in one. Grow it as a groundcover, or train it to climb arches and trellises.
Where it works best
Beds and borders. Plant 80cm apart as a groundcover to carpet a bed in yellow and orange. It makes a bright base under roses and shrubs.
Arches and trellises. Let the twining stems climb an arch or trellis, tying in the leaders early, for a column of gold foliage.
Underplanting. It suits planting beneath taller plants where there is enough light. Colour is strongest in good light.
Growing Summer Sunset Variegated Asiatic Star Jasmine in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is a tough plant that will tolerate temperatures down to about -5C, so it suits cool regions as well as warm ones. The gold and orange colour is best in good light, so avoid deep shade.
Soil. Any well drained soil. It does not mind soil type, but it dislikes sitting in water.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. After that it manages with occasional watering in dry spells. A spring feed of slow release fertiliser helps it fill out.
Pruning. Prune as required to maintain a tidy appearance, trimming stems that wander onto paths or into neighbouring plants. The milky sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when you prune.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Summer Sunset as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes suit a large groundcover planting, and the 140mm pots give a stronger start for an arch or a smaller bed.
The tube is supplied by our grower, so it is not always in stock. While there is none it shows as sold out, and pressing the notify button on this page sends you an email the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
