Strawberry Blonde Grevillea (Grevillea 'Strawberry Blonde') is a dense, bushy native shrub that reaches 2 to 3m tall and 3 to 4m wide, with soft, deeply lobed foliage. Maroon and creamy caramel bottlebrush flowers open for long periods through winter and spring, and honeyeaters feed on them at dawn and dusk. It makes an unusual large informal hedge or a big feature plant.
Why you'll love it
-
Two-tone flowers. Maroon and caramel-cream bottlebrush blooms look quite unlike the usual red and pink grevilleas.
-
A winter and spring show. The flowers last for long periods through the cooler months, when many gardens are short of colour.
-
Soft, lobed foliage. The fine, deeply cut leaves are soft to the touch and attractive even when the shrub is not in bloom.
-
Loved by honeyeaters. Birds flock in to feed at dawn and dusk, which makes it a lively addition to a wildlife garden.
-
Light frost and dry spells. It tolerates light frost and dry periods, so it copes with most mild-winter gardens.
Where it works best
Large informal hedge. Plant 2m apart in a row. At 3m tall and 3 to 4m wide the shrubs merge into a loose, billowing screen. Expect a soft shape, not a clipped line.
Feature planting. Give it a corner of a big bed with 3m of space on every side, where the winter flowers can be seen from the house.
Space is the catch. This is a large shrub and not suited to small courtyards. Check the mature width against your boundary before you plant.
Growing Strawberry Blonde Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the best flowering. It tolerates light frost and dry spells and suits subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens. Hard frosts are beyond it, so choose a hardier plant for cold inland sites.
Soil. Well drained clay loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH.
Water and feed. Water for the first 8 to 12 weeks until established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to it.
Pruning. Light pruning after flowering promotes dense growth.
What to expect when it arrives
Strawberry Blonde Grevillea is sold as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Because it grows to 3 to 4m wide, one plant covers a lot more ground than it first suggests, and you rarely need many.
Tube stock comes from our grower and supply is not always available. If the tube is marked sold out, the grower has none right now, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
