Splendens Double Pink Oleander (Nerium oleander 'Splendens') is a fast growing large shrub or small tree, 2m to 3m high and wide, covered with frilled, multi-petalled pink flowers. It is hardy, drought tolerant and easy care. All parts of an oleander are toxic if eaten, so it is not advised for gardens with pets or very small children.
Why you'll love it
-
Frilled double flowers. Full pink blooms with many ruffled petals open in abundance, in a soft but bright shade.
-
Often flowers young. It can flower even from a small plant, so you do not have to wait long for a display.
-
Tough and drought hardy. Sun loving, easy care and able to ride out dry spells and seasonal rains.
-
Good for hard places. It handles exposed sites, wind and polluted roadsides, as well as seaside gardens.
-
A woody, evergreen structure. Long, slender, leathery leaves stay on all year, so there is a screen when the flowers are done.
Where it works best
Flowering screens. Plant 2m apart in a row for an informal flowering screen. The shrubs will knit into a loose, 3m tall hedge.
Windbreaks and exposed sites. Wind, heat and pollution do not trouble it, which makes it a dependable boundary plant.
Large pots and poolside. Plant in a big container, or beside a pool where its evergreen foliage and bright flowers add a Mediterranean feel.
Growing Splendens Double Pink Oleander in Australia
Position and climate. Give it full sun, and shade a young plant from the hottest sun while it establishes. A settled plant may come through an overnight frost in a sheltered spot or an urban garden, so it suits tropical, subtropical, warm temperate, Mediterranean and dry gardens.
Soil. Free draining soil is all it asks.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well through the first 12 weeks. Established plants tolerate drought and seasonal rains, and need little else.
Pruning. Pruning is optional. Cut back after flowering or in autumn to encourage new growth, wearing gloves, and compost the clippings rather than burning them.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Splendens Double Pink Oleander as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small and may flower early. Plant it in full sun once the weather is warm, and shade it from harsh sun for the first few weeks.
Our grower does not always have tube stock available. When there is none, this page shows the tube as sold out, and the notify button will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
