Simply Zesty Oregano (Origanum vulgare 'OREG04') is a very strong flavoured oregano bred by Ozbreed, in which taste tests picked out peppery, minty and citrus tones. It forms a vibrant, mid green groundcover 25cm to 35cm high and 30cm to 40cm wide, and it goes to flower much later than seed grown types, which means a longer harvest.
Why you'll love it
-
A very strong, zesty flavour. Ozbreed calls it a real breakthrough in herb breeding, with peppery, minty and citrus tones in the taste.
-
A longer harvest. It goes to flower much later than seed grown oregano, so the leaves stay in good condition for longer.
-
Vibrant mid green foliage. The colour is bright and even, which makes a pleasing groundcover.
-
Groundcover habit. It spreads into an attractive groundcover, so it also works as an edging plant at the front of a sunny bed.
-
Made for cooking. Ozbreed recommends it for cooked dishes, where the strong flavour comes through.
Where it works best
Herb beds. Plant 30cm apart in spring, summer or early autumn, in full sun to light shade.
Groundcover in the kitchen garden. The spreading habit fills a sunny bed edge or the gap beside stepping stones.
Pots and troughs. A wide, free draining pot suits its dislike of wet feet.
In the kitchen. Ozbreed recommends it for cooked dishes because of its strong flavour. It is great in pasta and stews, on meats and potatoes, and on pizza.
Growing Simply Zesty Oregano in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to light shade. Oregano is a hardy perennial that suits temperate and Mediterranean gardens and tolerates frost. In humid, wet summers, airflow and drainage matter, so a raised bed or pot is safer.
Soil. It needs well drained soil. Avoid wet feet, which is the main way oregano is lost, particularly in winter.
Water and feed. Water as required, letting the soil dry out between waterings. In spring and autumn, apply a slow release fertiliser if required, or work compost into the soil. If you harvest heavily, give a light application of quick release fertiliser.
Pruning and harvest. Pick stems as you need them, and cut the clump back by about a third after flowering to keep it compact and produce fresh, tender growth.
