Silver Sunburst Yellow Buttons (Chrysocephalum apiculatum 'Silver Sunburst') is a low native groundcover, 30cm to 40cm high and 30cm to 50cm wide, with soft silver foliage that glows almost white in full sun. Small, golden-yellow button flowers cover it from late spring through the warmer months. It is larger and far more silver than the common yellow buttons, and it is hardy and nearly care-free once settled.
Why you'll love it
-
Silver foliage that is soft to touch. The leaves hold their colour through the year and look almost white in strong sun.
-
Sunny yellow buttons. Masses of golden-yellow flowers cover the plant from late spring through the warmer months.
-
Butterflies visit. The button flowers bring butterflies to a sunny garden bed or rockery.
-
Hardy and adaptable. Yellow buttons are found right across Australia, so the plant adapts to almost any soil and climate.
-
Good in a vase. Stems can be cut and brought indoors to enjoy.
Where it works best
Groundcover and mass planting. Plant 40cm apart and the plants knit into a silver carpet. It is a good choice for dry, sunny beds, verges and the edge of paths.
Rockeries and gravel gardens. The compact, mounding habit and silver colour sit well among stones, succulents and other natives.
Borders and pots. Use it at the front of a sunny border or in a pot, where the silver foliage spills over the edge.
Growing Silver Sunburst Yellow Buttons in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun maximises flowering, though it tolerates part shade. It tolerates hot conditions with regular watering, and because yellow buttons grow all over Australia, it adapts to nearly any climate.
Soil. Well drained soil. It will grow in almost any soil type, but it does not like to sit in water.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well during establishment. Once settled it needs little care. Apply a slow release native fertiliser in early spring.
Pruning. Little pruning is needed. Trim lightly after the main flowering to keep the plant compact.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Silver Sunburst Yellow Buttons as tube stock and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. A tube is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and it is the economical way to cover a large area. The potted packs arrive with more foliage and make a fuller carpet sooner.
Our tube stock is supplied by our grower, so it comes and goes. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment: press the notify button on this page and we will email you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
