Ranger Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos hybrid 'Ranger') is a dwarf kangaroo paw about 60cm tall and 50cm wide, with dark rusty red flowers over a long season. Evergreen foliage keeps its tidy shape between flowers, and the compact habit suits borders, rockeries and pots. It does best in dry, sunny positions with sharp drainage.
Why you'll love it
-
Dark rusty red flowers. A deep, warm red that enriches a native landscape and stands out against green and grey foliage.
-
A long flowering period. Blooms run from spring into summer, and trimming spent stems keeps the plant looking fresh.
-
Tidy when not in flower. Evergreen, neat foliage means it still earns its place between flushes.
-
Compact and versatile. At 60cm by 50cm it works in pots, rockeries and small drifts.
-
Good for birds and vases. The flowers attract birds and can be cut for indoor arrangements.
Where it works best
Borders and rockeries. A dwarf paw suits the dry, sunny parts of the garden. Plant 50cm apart so the clumps just touch, and pair them with silver or grey-green foliage.
Massed displays. A group of five or seven, spaced 50cm apart, gives a bold block of dark red in spring and summer.
Pots. Use a pot about 30cm wide and native potting mix to provide the drainage kangaroo paws like.
Growing Ranger Kangaroo Paw in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun in a frost-free location with plenty of air. Kangaroo paws like well drained, somewhat drier conditions, so Ranger suits Mediterranean, warm temperate and dry inland gardens. In humid or frosty districts, a pot is a safer bet.
Soil. Light, free draining soil. Raise the bed on clay, or grow it in a pot of native potting mix.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it establishes, then deeply in dry weather, letting the soil surface dry between waterings. Feed in spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser.
Pruning. Prune old flowers and dead foliage regularly, and the plant will reward your efforts. Cut flower stems right to the base once they have finished.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Ranger Kangaroo Paw as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Expect a small, leafy young plant. Unpack promptly, plant at the same depth as the tube in full sun and water in well.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
