Poorinda Splendour Grevillea (Grevillea 'Poorinda Splendour') is a fast-growing, evergreen native shrub about 2m tall and only 1.2m wide. Its oval leaves carry a dark bronze sheen, which is unusual for a grevillea, and bold burgundy-red spider flowers appear in spring along the stems as well as at the tips. It suits a compact hedge or feature planting, and honeyeaters flock to it.
Why you'll love it
-
Flowers all along the stems. Burgundy-red spider flowers emerge from the branches as well as the tips, so the whole shrub is covered.
-
Bronze-sheened foliage. Oval leaves are bronze when young and keep a dark sheen, which gives year-round interest.
-
A slim, compact size. At 1.2m wide it fits where larger grevilleas do not.
-
Honeyeaters love it. The flowers draw birds at dusk and dawn.
-
Frost hardy and light on water. It is frost hardy and needs little water once established.
Where it works best
Compact hedges. Plant 80cm apart in a single row. The narrow shrubs close into a 2m hedge within a few seasons.
Feature planting. A single plant, or a group of three, gives a bold burgundy accent in a native or mixed border.
Bird gardens. A dense, flowering shrub in the garden brings honeyeaters within easy view.
Growing Poorinda Splendour Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is frost hardy and suits reasonably cold temperatures as well as subtropical climates. It tolerates dry spells and needs little water once established.
Soil. Well drained clay loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH. Avoid ground that stays wet.
Water and feed. Water regularly for the first 8 to 12 weeks until established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to it.
Pruning. Light pruning after flowering promotes dense growth. Clip tips only and leave old wood alone.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Poorinda Splendour Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Expect a small young plant that grows quickly. Plant it in a sunny spot and mulch lightly, keeping the mulch clear of the stem. Availability of the tube depends on our grower, who does not always have it ready. A sold out tube is simply waiting for the next batch, and the notify button on the page sends you an email the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
