Pink Frills Succulent (Echeveria shaviana 'Pink Frills') is a rosette succulent with silver-purple leaves and frilled pink edges. It reaches about 20cm tall and 25cm wide, and the amount of frilling varies from plant to plant, so each one is an individual. It suits pots, rockeries and bright rooms in a position with plenty of sun.
Why you'll love it
-
Frilled edges. Ruffled pink margins on silver-purple leaves give the rosette a lively, decorative look.
-
Every plant is unique. Shaviana types vary in colour and in how much frilling they show, so no two look the same.
-
Cool silver-purple tones. A soft palette that suits modern pots, pale gravel and dark stone.
-
Moderate size. At 25cm across it fills a bowl or a gap without taking over.
Where it works best
Decorative pots. A single rosette in a shallow glazed pot shows off the frills. Plant 25cm apart if you set several together.
Rockeries and gravel gardens. In a sunny gravel bed the pink edges stand out against the grey. Keep it where rain drains away.
Bright indoor spots. A sunny windowsill suits it, as long as the rosette gets plenty of light. Echeverias are not generally listed as toxic to cats or dogs, although a mouthful of any plant can disagree with a pet.
Growing Pink Frills Succulent in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the strongest leaf colour, so give it the brightest spot available and harden a new plant off gradually. Outdoors it suits warm temperate, Mediterranean and arid or semi-arid gardens, and subtropical ones if it can stay out of persistent rain. Cold, wet winters are its weak point, so in southern and highland gardens pot it and shelter it from frost.
Soil. Free draining soil is essential. Use a gritty cactus mix or a raised, gravelly bed with the crown just above the surface.
Water and feed. Water sparingly, and only once the top of the soil is dry, keeping the rosette itself dry. After the first week of settling in, a deep soak every two weeks in summer suits a pot, with much less in cool months. A single light feed in spring is optional.
Pruning. No pruning. Remove dead, dry leaves by hand and let the frilled leaves otherwise be.
What to expect when it arrives
Pink Frills Succulent is sold as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that settles in quickly once potted up. Tube plants are young and small, and the frills and full colour build as they grow.
Plants are packed upright and ride well, since the thick leaves store water. Open the box promptly, let the plant sit in bright shade for a few days, and hold off watering for about a week so any bruised roots can callus. This tube is raised by our grower, so supply comes and goes. If it shows as sold out, the grower has none today, and the notify button on the page will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
