Pink French Lavender (Lavandula pedunculata) is a fragrant, hardy evergreen shrub with grey-green foliage and sprays of pink flowers topped with long petals. It grows 50cm to 1m tall and about 1m wide, and stays compact enough for a patio pot. It brings a romantic note to a cottage garden and tolerates frost and drought once established.
Why you'll love it
-
Pink flower sprays. Each flower head carries long petals above it, which gives the pink sprays a light, feathery look.
-
Scented foliage and flowers. Both the grey-green leaves and the blooms give off the familiar lavender scent, and cut flowers last in the vase or dry for potpourri.
-
Compact and adaptable. It stays small enough for pots, borders and rockeries, so it fits most gardens.
-
Hardy once established. An established plant tolerates light frost and dry spells.
-
Evergreen. The grey-green leaves keep the shrub looking good between flowering flushes.
Where it works best
Cottage garden borders. Plant in groups at the front of a sunny border, 80cm apart, where the pink flower sprays sit well against roses and silver foliage.
Patio pots. A large pot filled with a gritty mix keeps the perfume close to seats and doors.
Low hedges and rockeries. A row at 80cm centres forms a loose, scented hedge, and single plants fit dry rockery pockets in full sun.
Growing Pink French Lavender in Australia
Position and climate. Plant in full sun in free draining soil. It will tolerate lower light levels, but flowering is affected. French lavender loves cool climates with low humidity, so in humid regions a raised bed or pot gives it a better chance.
Soil. Free draining soil is the one real need. Avoid wet feet, and mound the planting area if the ground holds water.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly for the first 12 weeks, then reduce. A yearly application of slow release fertiliser after flowering maintains compact growth.
Pruning. Prune twice a year, taking off only a third of the foliage and avoiding old wood. Lavender can upset cats and dogs if they eat a lot of it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pink French Lavender as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly once planted. It arrives small and upright, then bushes out as the weather warms. Tube stock is supplied by our grower and is not always on hand. A sold out tube means the grower has none today, and the notify button on the page will email you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Can I grow it in a pot?
Yes. It is a compact variety and suits a patio pot. Use a free draining mix, a sunny spot and a pot with plenty of drainage holes.
Will frost damage it?
An established plant tolerates light frost and dry weather. Young plants are more vulnerable, so shelter them in their first winter if frosts are heavy.
How should I prune it?
Twice a year, removing about a third of the foliage and always cutting above green growth. Never cut into old wood, because it will not reshoot.
