Pink Curl Grevillea (Grevillea lavandulacea 'PAB01') is a low, resilient native groundcover bred by Ozbreed. It grows about 300mm high and spreads to about 1m wide, with dark green foliage and, from late winter through spring, masses of vivid pink, spider-like flowers that attract bees and birds.
Why you'll love it
-
Colour in the cooler months. The curled pink flowers open from late winter through spring, when most groundcovers have little to offer.
-
Bees and birds. The flowers feed pollinators and nectar-loving birds, which suits a biodiversity garden.
-
Better in humidity. Ozbreed reports greater tolerance to humidity than other forms of this species.
-
Better in heavier soils. Performance in heavier ground is improved over the usual form.
-
Neat dark foliage. The narrow leaves have rolled under edges and are a darker green than the usual grey-green of the species, sitting flat in a tidy carpet.
Where it works best
Groundcover and mass planting. Plant 70cm apart, about two plants per square metre, and the mats meet as they spread towards 1m wide.
Borders along paths and drives. One to two plants per linear metre defines the edge of a bed, path or driveway, and a row at 70cm gives a continuous low band.
Biodiversity gardens, containers and feature planting. The spreading habit suits pots and mixed plantings, and a drift in flower works as a feature in a small or large garden.
Growing Pink Curl Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to light shade. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, adding that more testing is required. It is not listed for Queensland, so we do not recommend it there yet.
Soil. It performs in a wide range of garden conditions and copes with heavier soil better than other forms. On clay that stays wet, plant on a low mound, because grevilleas dislike sitting wet.
Water and feed. Water well through establishment to build strong roots. Once settled it is hardy and needs little watering. Use a native fertiliser low in phosphorus, either at planting or to rejuvenate tired growth.
Pruning. Leave it to grow naturally, or prune every few years to improve density or control its size.
What to expect when it arrives
We list Pink Curl Grevillea in 140mm pots in packs of 10. At 70cm spacing a pack covers about five square metres, and low spreading plants like this settle quickly once they are in the ground. Stock comes from Ozbreed's licensed growers and is not always available, so a size shows as sold out when no grower has it. The notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
