Panrock Princess Grevillea (Grevillea petrophiloides x oligomera 'Panrock Princess') is a native shrub 1.5m to 1.8m tall and about 1.8m wide, with very fine, feathery pale green leaves. Tall stems of hot pink poker flowers rise clear of the foliage for most of the year. It is a plant for dry, sunny gardens with sharp drainage, and it will not forgive soggy soil or humidity.
Why you'll love it
-
Hot pink pokers most months. The flowers stand well above the foliage and appear for most of the year.
-
Extremely drought tolerant. Once established it needs very little water, which suits waterwise and outback-style gardens.
-
Soft, feathery foliage. Fine pale green fronds give a light texture against darker shrubs.
-
Feeds honeyeaters. Birds flock to the flowers at dawn and dusk.
-
Built for heat. It comes from the Western Australian goldfields and wheatbelt, so hot, dry summers suit it.
Where it works best
Waterwise and outback gardens. Plant 1.5m apart in a sunny bed with gritty, sandy soil. It forms a loose, open shrub that sits well among other dry-climate natives.
Dry, sunny borders. Use it where irrigation is limited and the sun is hot, and let the pink flower stems carry the colour.
Wildlife gardens. The year-round flowers feed honeyeaters, especially in the early morning and evening.
Growing Panrock Princess Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to dappled shade. It tolerates a light overnight frost once established, but it dislikes humidity and hard frosts. It suits Mediterranean, arid and drier warm temperate gardens, and is a poor choice for humid or wet coastal ones.
Soil. Very well drained loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH. Avoid humus-rich soil and wet spots. The parent plants have vigorous roots, so keep it away from underground pipes.
Water and feed. Extremely drought tolerant once established, but water regularly through the first summer so the roots settle. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent.
Pruning. Light pruning in autumn promotes dense growth. There is no need for hard cutting.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Panrock Princess Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Expect a small young plant. The first summer is the critical one, so plant in autumn or spring, keep it watered, and give it its place in the sun. The tube is grown for us by our grower, who does not always have stock. It shows as sold out when there is none, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
