The Northcote Pottery Balmoral is a glazed pottery bird bath in deep blue, 500mm high and 400mm wide, in a traditional shape that suits an established garden as comfortably as a new one. Each piece is handmade, and the glaze is what does the work outdoors: a sealed, weather resistant surface designed to hold its colour under normal outdoor exposure. What it does

  • Glazed against the weather. The fired finish gives a hard, sealed surface that stands up to sun and rain and is made to keep its colour rather than chalk out.
  • Carries colour through green. Blue travels furthest across planting, so the bath still reads from the back door in midsummer.
  • Handmade individually. Each bath is made by hand, so no two are identical in the way a mass moulded ornament is.
  • A water source birds use. Drinking and bathing water brings birds in far more reliably than planting on its own.

How to use it

Set it on a flat, solid surface where it cannot rock. Refresh the water regularly and clean the bowl periodically to stop algae building on the glaze, which is the main maintenance job with any bird bath left in the sun.
