Mrs Andreasen Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Mrs Andreasen') is a large, bushy shrub, about 2.5m tall and 1.5m wide, with fully double, frilled flowers in a soft butter-peach shade. In frost-free climates it flowers from summer right through to winter. It makes a showy hedge or a feature plant for the warmer parts of Australia.
Why you'll love it
-
Fully double, frilled flowers. Big, blousy blooms with layers of ruffled petals in soft butter-peach, a gentler shade than the usual hot pinks and reds.
-
A very long season. Flowers appear from summer through to winter in warm climates, and for most of the year where there is no frost.
-
Hedge or feature. It grows into a dense, large bush that works as a flowering hedge or a single feature shrub.
-
Edible flowers. The flowers are edible and make a showy garnish, if you grow them unsprayed.
-
Suits the pool and the courtyard. A sheltered, sunny spot beside a pool, deck or entry shows the flowers off well.
Where it works best
Flowering hedge. Plant 1.2m apart in a single row for a dense flowering hedge. At 1.5m wide the plants overlap at that spacing and fill any gaps.
Feature plant. Give it a sunny, sheltered spot near an entry or deck, with 1.5m of width to spread.
Poolside planting. Its big blooms suit poolside beds and courtyards, provided the position is out of strong wind.
Growing Mrs Andreasen Hibiscus in Australia
Position and climate. A sunny, sheltered position is ideal in the warmer parts of Australia: tropical, subtropical and frost-free warm temperate gardens. Shelter it from strong winds and exposed sites, and protect it from frost. In cooler gardens it needs a warm spot against a wall with frost protection, or a large pot that can move under cover in winter.
Soil. Free-draining soil rich in organic matter. Add a potting mix rich in peat moss or humus at planting.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well, particularly through dry spells and in the flowering season. Fertilise after the first flowering in spring.
Pruning. Prune after the first flowering in spring to shape the bush and keep it dense.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Mrs Andreasen Hibiscus as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tubes are the economical way to plant a long hedge, and in warm soil they settle in and put on growth within a few weeks. Expect a small plant on arrival that grows steadily toward its full 2.5m.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?
Plant 1.2m apart in a single row. The shrubs spread to about 1.5m, so they overlap and close into a dense hedge.
Will it flower all year?
Only where there is no frost. In warm climates it flowers from summer to winter, and for most of the year if frost-free. In cooler areas the season is shorter.
Can it survive frost?
No. Protect it from frost and shelter it from strong wind. In cool gardens grow it in a pot that can be moved under cover.
