Medinilla pendula does something very few shrubs do: it hangs its pink and red flower chains below the branches rather than holding them above. It settles at about 1.2m tall and 1m wide with a weeping frame, so the display sits at eye level in a raised pot. This is a tropical and subtropical plant, frost tender and genuinely fond of humidity.

Why you'll love it

  • Flowers that hang. The pendulous chains drop clear of the foliage, so it earns a spot where people stand close, not the back of a bed.
  • Humidity is an advantage. Muggy coastal summers that mark other flowering shrubs are the conditions it evolved for.
  • Compact and containable. At roughly 1.2m by 1m it holds its scale in a courtyard for years without hard pruning.
  • Uncommon in Australian gardens. Few nurseries carry it, so it reads as a collector's plant rather than another gardenia.

Where it works best

Pots and containers. A pot on a plinth or raised bench shows the hanging flowers properly and gives you control over drainage, which matters most to this plant.

Balconies and courtyards. Sheltered walls hold warmth and humidity and keep drying wind off the foliage. Bright filtered light is the target.

Feature planting. In tropical and subtropical gardens it can go into the ground under high canopy, where dappled light mimics its Southeast Asian origins.

Growing Medinilla pendula in Australia

Position and climate. Bright filtered light, never harsh afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves. Tropical and subtropical gardens can grow it outdoors year round. In cooler districts treat it as a pot plant and move it under cover before the first cold snap, because frost damages it outright.

Soil. Its relatives grow on tree branches, so it wants an open mix: premium potting mix opened up with orchid bark and perlite, in a pot that drains freely.

Water and feed. Keep the mix evenly damp through the warm months and let it dry further between waterings in winter, never standing in a saucer. Liquid fertiliser at half strength every four to six weeks from spring to autumn suits it.

Pruning. Very little is needed. Remove spent flower chains and tip prune lightly after flowering to keep the frame bushy, and avoid cutting into old wood.

What to expect when it arrives

It comes as 125mm plants in packs of ten, 180mm plants in packs of six, or as a single established 300mm plant. The smaller sizes take a season or two to build the arching branches that carry the flowers, while the 300mm plant gives a display sooner.

Be patient after delivery. This species sulks when light levels change suddenly, so expect a few quiet weeks and possibly a dropped leaf before it moves. Delivered Australia wide, delivery from $29.95, and every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

Can I grow it outside the tropics?

Yes, but only in a pot you can move. It has no frost tolerance, so cooler gardens need a sheltered warm spot over summer and cover through winter.

Why are the leaf edges browning?

Usually dry air, wind or direct sun. Move it somewhere bright but shaded from hot sun, and group it with other plants to lift humidity.

Does it need a special potting mix?

An open one. Standard potting mix on its own stays too wet, so add orchid bark and perlite until water runs through freely.

How do I get it to flower again?

Steady warmth, bright filtered light and consistent moisture through spring and summer do most of the work. Avoid heavy pruning: the chains form on established wood.
