Madeira Red Double Marguerite (Argyranthemum frutescens 'Madeira Red Double') is a fast, bushy daisy that bursts with double red flowers above feathery green foliage all through the warmer months. It forms a neat mound about 45cm tall and wide, so it is bigger than the dwarf Madeira forms, and it asks only for sun, drainage and a little feeding.
Why you'll love it
-
Double red flowers. Full, rounded petals in a strong red make a bold block of colour among softer plants.
-
A long season. The flowers keep coming through the warmer months, particularly if you deadhead.
-
Bred to be bushy. The Madeira series is extra bushy, early flowering and naturally compact, so the plant stays dense rather than leggy.
-
Feathery foliage. Fine, ferny green leaves make a soft backdrop that sets off the red.
-
Sun loving and quick. It grows fast in a hot, sunny position and fills gaps in a season.
Where it works best
Mixed beds and borders. At 45cm tall and wide it holds its own mid border. Plant 40cm apart for a united mass, or singly among perennials.
Large pots. A pot of 30cm or more suits it well, and one plant is enough to fill it with colour. Use a free draining mix.
Hot, dry, sunny places. It copes with spots that cook other bedding, such as a north facing wall, as long as it is watered in dry spells.
Growing Madeira Red Double Marguerite in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun, and frost free conditions. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens, and in cold regions it is best as seasonal bedding, or overwintered in shelter. It may slow in hot midsummer.
Soil. Free draining, sandy or light soil suits it, though it will grow in clay. In pots, use quality potting mix with good drainage.
Water and feed. Mulch with organic matter, and water until established and through dry spells. Feed while it is flowering for the best display.
Pruning. Deadhead regularly. Removing dead flowers prolongs the flowering season and keeps the plant tidy.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Madeira Red Double Marguerite as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Because marguerites grow fast, a tube becomes a full plant within a season. Our grower supplies the tube, and supply comes and goes. If it shows as sold out, the grower has none right now: press the notify button on the page and we email you the day it returns.
It travels upright. Pot up promptly, water in and put it in full sun once it has settled.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How is the double different from the single?
The double form has full, rounded petals packed into each flower, and grows to about 45cm. The single form is a dwarf, around 15 to 25cm tall, with simpler flowers.
Will it cope with a hot position?
Yes, it loves sun and heat. Growth may slow in hot midsummer, but it recovers, and regular watering and feeding keep it blooming.
Is it safe for dogs and cats?
No. Marguerites can upset pets if they chew them, so keep this plant where animals do not graze.
