Jumbo Yellow Swan River Daisy (Brachyscome 'Jumbo Yellow') is a low, spreading native daisy that covers itself in pale yellow flowers in spring and again in autumn. It grows about 30cm tall and 50cm wide on fine, cut-leaf foliage, and the blooms shift from cream through butter to clear lemon as they open and age, which gives soft ombre effects across a bed. It is a native alternative to seaside daisy.
Why you'll love it
-
Two heavy flushes. Flowers cover the plant in spring and again in autumn, with a lighter scatter between.
-
Ombre yellows. Blooms open cream, deepen to butter and finish clear lemon, so a patch carries several shades at once.
-
Spreads to cover ground. A low, spreading habit knits into a carpet of colour without any fuss.
-
Takes tough sites. It tolerates most soil types and planting conditions, including seaside and alkaline soil.
-
Effortless once established. Once settled in, it needs little more than a drink in a dry spell and the odd clip.
Where it works best
Mass plantings. Plant 40cm apart for an eye-catching sweep. At that spacing the plants knit together as they spread and crowd out weeds.
Pots, baskets and window boxes. The spreading stems spill over the edges of containers and hanging baskets. One plant per 25cm pot is plenty.
Rockeries and paving. Tuck plants between pavers and into rock pockets in full sun, where the flowers soften hard edges.
Cottage gardens. The pale yellow mixes easily with blues, whites and purples at the front of a border.
Growing Jumbo Yellow Swan River Daisy in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun for the best flowering. It copes with most planting conditions, including seaside gardens, and suits subtropical, temperate and Mediterranean climates, though in very humid conditions good air movement and drainage help.
Soil. Free draining soil enriched with organic matter suits it. It tolerates most types, including alkaline and sandy seaside soils.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well during extended dry periods. Once established it needs little attention beyond that. Feeding is optional.
Pruning. Clip to deadhead and encourage a fresh flush of flowers mid season. A light all-over trim keeps the plant neat and compact.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Jumbo Yellow Swan River Daisy as tube stock only: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly in sunny, free-draining soil. It is an economical way to plant a bed, a rockery or a row of pots.
Because the tubes come from our grower, they are not always on hand. A sold out tube simply means the grower has none right now, and the notify button on the page sends you an email the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
