Brachyscome and Cut Leaf Daisies

Brachyscome is the native daisy that never seems to stop flowering. It forms a soft, low mound of finely cut leaves and covers it with small daisies in mauve, blue, pink, white or magenta for most of the year, with the heaviest show from spring to autumn. It is ideal for edging, rockeries, pots, hanging baskets and filling between larger natives. This range covers the cut leaf daisy and its selected colours. Every plant is delivered Australia wide.

How to choose a brachyscome

The workhorse is the cut leaf daisy, Brachyscome multifida: about 30cm tall and 60cm wide with mauve flowers, long lived and easy. The named forms give you colour choice on the same plant: Mauve Bliss, Magenta Bliss and White Bliss are compact and flower heavily, Pink and Surdaisy Pink are soft pinks, and Mauve Mystery spreads a little wider, to about 80cm, which suits banks and baskets. Blue Moon, Break of Day and Hot Candy bring deeper blues, purples and a hot pink for stronger contrast.

Where brachyscome works

Give it full sun or light shade and soil that drains. It suits the front of a native border, the gaps between pavers and rocks, the top of a low wall and containers of every size. It handles light frost, coastal conditions and short dry spells, and it is a useful nectar plant for small native bees and butterflies. Find companions in our Australian natives range and in rockery plants.

Planting and spacing

Plant 30cm to 40cm apart for a continuous edge. In heavy soil, raise the bed a little or add coarse sand. Mulch lightly with gravel or fine bark, keeping it off the crown. Water twice a week for the first month.

Care basics

Shear the plant lightly after each heavy flush of flowers to keep it compact and bring on the next. Water in dry spells: it flowers longer with regular moisture. Feed once in spring with a native fertiliser. After three or four years plants can thin in the centre, and they are easily replaced or renewed from pieces that have rooted at the edges. For larger areas, combine it with plants from our ground cover range.
