Jazmini Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides 'TJ01') is a compact, tidy star jasmine bred by Ozbreed to give the same fragrant white flowers with up to one-third of the pruning. Trained up a support it reaches about 2m high and 500mm wide; grown as a groundcover it forms a dense mat about 400mm high and 1.6m across. It is evergreen and happy in sun or shade.
Why you'll love it
-
Far less pruning. Shorter internodes, smaller leaves and naturally dense branching mean it needs up to one-third of the pruning of common star jasmine, while still covering well.
-
Fragrant white flowers. Masses of star-shaped, highly scented blooms open through the warmer months, peaking from late spring to summer.
-
Sun or shade. It performs from full sun to moderately heavy shade, which widens the choice of position for a flowering climber.
-
Climber or groundcover. The same plant clothes a fence, fills a planter or carpets a bed.
-
Good for pollinators. Bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects visit the flowers.
Where it works best
Fences and living screens. Plant three to the metre, about 33cm apart, and weave the stems horizontally along wires or trellis. Horizontal training encourages lateral shoots, which gives a denser screen than letting the stems run straight up.
Groundcover. Set plants 45cm apart, about five to the square metre, and the mat closes into a dense, weed-suppressing cover about 400mm deep.
Courtyards, planter boxes and small gardens. The compact habit suits narrow spaces where traditional star jasmine becomes difficult to manage, and the scent is best placed beside a path, doorway or seat.
Growing Jazmini Star Jasmine in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to moderately heavy shade. Ozbreed lists it for Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia and says it performs well in humid climates, which covers subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. In districts with hard frosts, shelter young plants through their first winter.
Soil. Well drained soil gives the best performance. On heavy clay, plant on a low mound and dig in compost.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it establishes, then ease off as the roots spread. A slow release fertiliser in spring suits a plant that is flowering and climbing at the same time.
Pruning. Light pruning after flowering keeps the shape tidy and encourages bushier growth. Wear gloves, because the milky sap can irritate skin.
What to expect when it arrives
We list Jazmini Star Jasmine as tube stock and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes are the economical way to cover a long fence or a large bed, and the potted packs give a faster start. Young plants travel well and settle quickly, though a climber needs a wire or trellis from the first day. Stock comes from Ozbreed's licensed growers and is not always available, so a size shows as sold out when no grower has it. The notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it?
For a fence or screen, plant 33cm apart, which is three per metre. As a groundcover, plant 45cm apart, about five per square metre.
Will it flower in shade?
Yes, Ozbreed rates it from full sun to moderately heavy shade. As with most flowering climbers, expect the heaviest flowering in the brightest position.
How is it different from ordinary star jasmine?
The flowers and scent are the same. Jazmini has a tidier, denser habit with smaller leaves and shorter gaps between the leaf joints, so it needs up to a third of the pruning.
