Ground Hug Myoporum (Myoporum insulare) is a native groundcover that stays about 10cm high and spreads 4m or more wide. It grows rapidly sideways, forms dense, weed controlling foliage and holds surface soil, which makes it a cost effective cover for roadsides, banks and large beds. An Ozbreed line that tolerates frost, drought and coastal conditions.
Why you'll love it
-
Only 10cm high. It keeps sight lines open, and Ozbreed notes it has some of the best line of sight vision among low growing plants.
-
Rapid sideways spread. Wide coverage per plant means fewer plants for big areas.
-
Controls weeds. Dense foliage shades out weeds, particularly at three plants per square metre.
-
Holds soil. It gives good surface erosion control on slopes and verges.
-
Tough. It handles frost, drought and coastal conditions, with frost resistance improved down to minus 5 degrees.
Where it works best
Roadsides and pathway plantings. Plant 60cm apart, about three plants per square metre, for effective weed control along verges and paths.
Wide borders and rain gardens. Where you can wait for cover, plant one per one to two square metres, roughly 1m to 1.4m apart.
Covering untidy objects. Ozbreed lists it for hiding untidy objects, because it is dense enough to blanket them as it spreads.
Growing Ground Hug Myoporum in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun. Ozbreed says it suits most landscapes within 100km of the coast across northern New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, and improved frost resistance lets it grow further inland. Queensland is not listed.
Soil. It tolerates a range of soil pH levels, plus heavier and moderately boggy soils, but not ground that is waterlogged all the time.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it establishes, then it copes with dry spells.
Pruning. Low maintenance. An annual edge prune keeps it where you want it, and Ozbreed advises avoiding pruning in winter and summer. If it gets tall, prune aggressively every four to five years. The leaves are toxic, so keep stock and pets from browsing it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Ground Hug Myoporum as tube stock and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. At three plants per square metre, 100 square metres takes 300 plants, so tubes are the economical way to cover a large area and the 140mm plants give quicker cover. They arrive upright and settle in within a few weeks.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
