Great White Lomandra (Lomandra longifolia 'Great White') is a variegated native tussock, about 40 to 50cm high and wide, that lifts plantings where plain green would be flat. It is a denser, more compact form than ordinary lomandra, with bigger flowers, and it is clean growing, uniform and non seeding. Ozbreed describes it as similar to Katrinus Deluxe Lomandra, with a variegated twist.
Why you'll love it
-
Variegated foliage. The variegated leaves lift a mass planting out of plain green and read clearly from a distance.
-
Dense and compact. It is a more compact, denser form than standard lomandra, with bigger flowers.
-
Clean growing and non seeding. The clumps stay uniform and do not self seed, so a planting looks the same year after year.
-
Lives on rain. It tolerates drought and cold, and survives on natural rain in most populated parts of Australia.
-
Takes wind and salt. It tolerates windy and salt laden positions, though not the foredune right on the beach.
Where it works best
Mass planting. Plant 45cm apart in offset rows, about five plants per square metre. The clumps join within two seasons into an even, bright mat.
Roadsides, offices and golf courses. Ozbreed lists these commercial sites among its uses. The uniform habit and non seeding clumps keep them tidy with minimal care.
Feature plantings and gardens. Three or five clumps set against dark foliage or paving give a clean accent. In a border, use two to three plants per metre of row.
Growing Great White Lomandra in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to moderate shade. Ozbreed lists southern New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, so it suits warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. In Sydney it needs free draining soil or light to moderate shade. It is not suitable for Queensland, apart from cooler pockets such as Toowoomba.
Soil. Sandy, sandy loam and clay soils all suit it, provided drainage is free. Plant with the crown at or above soil and mulch level.
Water and feed. Water as required for 8 to 13 weeks until established. After that it lives on natural rain in most places, with an occasional top up in extreme drought. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Prune as required. If a clump looks tired, cut it back in late winter and it will reshoot.
What to expect when it arrives
Great White Lomandra is sold as tube stock, in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tubes suit large plantings, the packs of 10 give a quicker border, and the 200mm pots give the fullest clump from the start. Stock comes from Ozbreed's licensed growers and is not always available: a size shows as sold out when no grower has it, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Lomandra settles fast in warm soil.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
