The GRC Classic Urn is a footed, waisted urn in glass reinforced concrete, sold in two sizes at 55 x 43cm and 74 x 57cm. A formal shape, the sort that works in matched pairs at a gate or a front door. The standard finish is a warm corten style rust, with ten sprayed colours behind it.
Why you'll love it
-
A classical profile without the mass. Stone urns of this size are a machinery job. These weigh 18kg and 24kg empty.
-
Rust that reads warm against green. The corten style standard finish suits a period garden as readily as a modern one.
-
Eleven finishes, or a colour of your own. Custom sprays use Dulux Weathershield, guaranteed 15 years against blistering, peeling and flaking.
-
The raised foot lifts the planting. Foliage sits above ground level, which is what gives a pair of urns presence.
Sizes and what fits in them
All measurements are outside dimensions, diameter by height. The urn narrows below the rim, so soil volumes are smaller than the widths suggest.
-
55 x 43cm, 26 litres, 18kg. A clipped ball, a compact topiary, or a seasonal planting trailing over the lip.
-
74 x 57cm, 40 litres, 24kg. An established shrub, a standard rose, or a larger topiary with room to shape.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Glass reinforced concrete: a concrete skin cast over glass fibre, which keeps the walls thin and the weight sensible.
Outdoors. Built for outdoor installation, commercial sites included. The weathering guarantee sits in the coating rather than the concrete: Dulux Weathershield sprays are covered 15 years against blistering, peeling and flaking. We publish no frost rating for the body, so in hard frost districts keep it clear of standing water.
Drainage. It has drainage holes and they must stay clear. Raise it on feet, screen the holes with fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric, which clogs, then add 50mm of 10mm gravel and a premium potting mix, never garden soil. Aggressive roots damage any planter, so choose plants suited to pots. Under cover, use a saucer.
What to expect when it arrives
Pots ship empty and unplanted. Rust finish stock is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days, while custom spray colours are made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Set the 74 x 57cm size in position before you fill it: 40 litres of wet mix on 24kg of urn is more than it looks.
