Golden Glow Resinbush (Euryops virgineus 'Golden Glow') is a compact, fluffy shrub that covers itself in honey-scented golden daisies in winter, when most gardens are bare. It reaches 70cm to 1m high and wide, with fine feathery green foliage, and it is far smaller than the parent species, which can top head height.
Why you'll love it
-
Winter colour. Golden yellow daisies open through the cold months, and they carry a honey scent.
-
Food for pollinators. The flowers are rich in pollen at a time of year when bees and butterflies need it.
-
Fits small spaces. It stays around a metre or under, so it suits a flowerbed or a patio pot.
-
Fast growing and hardy. It is heat tolerant and frost tolerant, and grows in sand, loam or clay.
-
Coastal and exposed sites. It is happy at the coast, in a windy spot and in full sun, even beside a busy road.
Where it works best
Mass planting and nature strips. Plant 70cm apart for a flowering drift along a nature strip, a street edge or a sunny, dry bank.
Rockeries and flowerbeds. Its fluffy habit suits cottage-style beds and rockeries in full sun, and it earns its place with winter flowers.
Patio pots. It is compact enough for a large pot or container, where the honey scent is easy to enjoy.
Growing Golden Glow Resinbush in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun for the best flowering. It prefers drier or coastal climates to the northern tropics. It is heat and frost tolerant, and in very cold districts with prolonged frost or snow it can be grown as a spring to autumn annual.
Soil. Well-drained soil in sand, loam or clay. It does well in poor, dry soil in a sunny site, and in coastal and exposed positions.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks. Water during prolonged dry spells to maintain good flowering.
Pruning. Prune hard after flowering to encourage new growth and flowers for next year.

Common questions
When does Golden Glow flower?
In winter, when the bush is covered in golden daisies. The flowers are honey-scented and give bees and butterflies food at a lean time of year.
How hard should I prune it?
Prune hard after flowering, which encourages new growth and flowers for next year. Leaving it unpruned gives fewer flowers the following winter.
Will it grow in cold areas?
It is frost tolerant, but in very cold climates with prolonged frost or snow, grow it as a spring to autumn annual or in a pot you can shelter.
