Gold Cluster Grevillea (Grevillea juniperina 'H22') is a low, dense groundcover grevillea with masses of spider-like gold flowers through winter and spring against fine green foliage. It grows to only 30cm high and 80cm to 1m wide, half the height of the popular juniperina forms, and that density is the point: it out competes weeds. Bred by Ozbreed for sites that want cover with no mowing and no weeding, it tolerates drought and frost.
Why you'll love it
-
Gold flowers in winter. The spider-like clusters open through the coldest months and into spring, when the garden needs them, and honeyeaters feed on them.
-
Half the height. At 30cm it stays low enough to see over, under windows and along paths.
-
Smothers weeds. The dense mat shades the soil, so a massed planting looks after itself.
-
Drought and frost tolerant. Established plants take the dry summers and cold winters of inland southern Australia.
-
A prune every two or three years. If required; many plantings are never touched.
Where it works best
Groundcover. Plant 80cm apart, one to two plants per square metre, and the mats meet within two seasons to form a weed suppressing cover.
Specimen planting. One plant in a raised bed, spilling over a low wall or beside a path, shows the habit off.
Banks and verges. The low mat holds mulch on a slope and takes the reflected heat off paving.
Growing Gold Cluster Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade, with sun giving the densest mat and the most flower. It suits warm temperate, cool temperate, Mediterranean and dry inland climates: New South Wales from Sydney south, the ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. It is not recommended for the humid subtropics.
Soil. Free draining to moderately heavy soils, though in Sydney free draining is the safer choice. Avoid soils with a pH above 7.
Water and feed. Water as needed for the first 8 to 13 weeks, with a chunky mulch, then leave it to the weather. Use a native slow release fertiliser sparingly, since grevilleas burn on rich feeding.
Pruning. Prune every two to three years if required, after flowering, taking only soft growth. The foliage is needle-like and a little prickly, so wear gloves.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Gold Cluster Grevillea in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. The 140mm packs are the economical choice for a large groundcover planting, while the 200mm plants are bigger and give cover sooner. The fine foliage travels without damage. Expect new growth within four to six weeks in warm soil.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it?
Plant 80cm apart for cover within two seasons, or 1m apart where budget matters more than speed. That is one to two plants per square metre.
Is it prickly?
A little. The needle-like foliage is firm, as on all Grevillea juniperina forms, so keep it a step back from where children play and wear gloves to prune.
Will it grow in Queensland?
Ozbreed lists it for Sydney and south, the ACT and the southern states. Humid subtropical summers are hard on it, so we do not recommend it on the Queensland coast.
