Fanfare Grevillea (Grevillea 'Fanfare') is a prostrate, carpet-forming native groundcover about 30cm tall and 2m to 3m wide, sometimes wider. Its deeply lobed leaves flush red when new, and magenta toothbrush flowers up to 10cm long appear in spring and summer. It is hardy and drought tolerant once established, and suits climates from cool to subtropical.
Why you'll love it
-
Red new growth. The deeply lobed leaves flush red, giving a rich backdrop to the flowers.
-
A flat, wide carpet. The neat but wide spread makes it a sensible choice for most groundcover planting.
-
Magenta toothbrush flowers. Flowers up to 10cm long appear in spring and summer, above the dissected leaves.
-
Hardy and drought tolerant. Once established it needs little care, and it suits climates from reasonably cold to subtropical.
-
Possibly forgiving of damp soil. Based on its parent species it may tolerate wetter soils than other grevilleas, though that is worth testing for yourself.
Where it works best
Rocky embankments and slopes. Plant 1.5m apart. It controls erosion and covers rock faces and sloping ground with a low carpet.
Under shrubs. Use it as a groundcover beneath taller plants, where the red-tipped leaves provide a colourful underlay.
Wildlife gardens. The flowers provide nectar and the dense low growth offers shelter for small creatures.
Growing Fanfare Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the longest flowering season. It is suited to reasonably cold temperatures through to subtropical climates, and is hardy and drought tolerant once established.
Soil. Well-drained soil. Based on its parent species it may tolerate wetter soils than other grevilleas, so test this out for yourself rather than relying on it.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas can be sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Little is needed. Trim the edges after flowering if it spreads further than you want.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Fanfare Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 300mm pots, sold singly. Tubes cover large areas economically, and the 300mm pots give instant cover where you need it. Plants arrive upright and small, and begin to spread as soon as they are settled in warm soil.
Tubes are supplied by our grower and are not always in stock. A sold out tube simply means the grower has none today, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it?
About 1.5m apart. Each plant spreads 2m to 3m, sometimes wider, so mulch the gaps while they fill in.
Does it tolerate wet soil?
Possibly more than other grevilleas, because of its parent species, but you should test it. Plant it in well drained soil to be safe.
How tall does it get?
About 30cm. It is prostrate and spreads wide rather than up.
