Everlasting Mega Gold Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos hybrid 'Everlasting Mega Gold') is a mid sized, longer lived kangaroo paw with large gold flowers on show all year round in mild climates. The clump reaches about 45 to 55cm high and wide, and the flower stems rise to between 90cm and 1m. Like the other Everlasting types it gets far less black spot than short lived kangaroo paws. It is an Ozbreed line.
Why you'll love it
-
Large gold flowers. The flower heads are big and bold, and the colour carries from a long way off.
-
Tall stems on a mid sized clump. Stems reach 90cm to 1m above a clump about half that height, so the flowers stand clear of the foliage.
-
Longer lived. It lasts well beyond the short lived kangaroo paws, and gets far less black spot.
-
Flowers all year round. In mild climates there are flowers on display through the year. In colder climates it takes a rest in winter.
-
Frost and drought tolerant. Once established it handles cold winters and dry summers in a sunny, open position.
Where it works best
Mass planting. Plant 45cm apart, about five plants per square metre. The clumps knit into a band and the gold stems rise in one sweep.
Borders and garden beds. In a border use two to three plants per metre of row. The 1m stems suit the middle of a bed, behind lower plants.
Pots and cut flowers. A large pot shows off the tall stems, and the flowers last well in a vase.
Growing Everlasting Mega Gold Kangaroo Paw in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun in an open position. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland. In northern Queensland it is shorter lived, about two to three years, and further south it is a long term plant. Where winters are cold it will not flower through them.
Soil. Sharp drainage matters more than anything else. Well drained soil or a raised bed suits it, and heavy soil works if you avoid regular wet feet. Plant with the crown above the surface and keep mulch from piling over it.
Water and feed. Water as required for 8 to 13 weeks until established, then step back. Use a slow release fertiliser once a year. Humid, shady spots invite leaf spotting, so give it sun and air.
Pruning. Remove older flower stems as required, and cut back untidy foliage every one to two years.
What to expect when it arrives
Everlasting Mega Gold Kangaroo Paw is grown in 140mm pots in packs of 10, a good quantity for a massed band. Stock comes from Ozbreed's licensed growers and is not always available. The size shows as sold out when no grower has it, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Plants travel upright and settle within a few weeks in warm soil.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
