Everlasting Gold Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos hybrid 'Everlasting Gold') is a semi compact, longer lived kangaroo paw that flowers all year round in mild climates. The clump is only 30 to 40cm high and wide, with gold flower stems rising to 70 to 80cm. Compared with short lived kangaroo paws it gets far less black spot, and it tolerates frost and drought. It is an Ozbreed kangaroo paw.
Why you'll love it
-
Flowers all year round. In mild climates the flowers are on display through the whole year. In colder climates it rests over the winter months.
-
Longer lived. Short lived kangaroo paws often fade after a season or two. This one lasts longer and gets far less of the black spot that marks them.
-
Semi compact. A 30 to 40cm clump suits the front of a border, a raised bed or a pot.
-
Frost and drought tolerant. Once established it takes cold winters and dry summers in an open, sunny position.
-
Good for cutting. The flower stems reach 70 to 80cm and look good in arrangements.
Where it works best
Mass planting and borders. Plant 35cm apart, about eight plants per square metre, for a dense band of gold flowers. In a border allow three plants per metre of row.
Pots and raised beds. The compact clump suits a large pot or a raised planter, where the sharp drainage kangaroo paws demand is easy to give.
Cut flower patches. A small block beside a vegetable bed or a sunny fence supplies stems for the house through much of the year.
Growing Everlasting Gold Kangaroo Paw in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun in an open position. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland. In northern Queensland it is shorter lived, about two to three years, while further south it is a long term plant. In colder climates it will not flower in the winter months.
Soil. Well drained soil or a raised bed is the one real requirement. It will work in heavy soil if you avoid regular wet feet, so mound clay beds. Keep the crown at or above the soil surface, never buried in mulch.
Water and feed. Water as required for 8 to 13 weeks until established, then leave it to the weather. Use a slow release fertiliser once a year. In humid, shaded spots any kangaroo paw can still mark, so give it sun and air.
Pruning. Remove older flower stems as required, and cut back untidy foliage every one to two years.
What to expect when it arrives
Everlasting Gold Kangaroo Paw is grown in 140mm pots in packs of 10, the practical quantity for a massed band. Stock comes from Ozbreed's licensed growers and is not always available. The size shows as sold out when no grower has it, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Plants travel upright in their pots and settle within a few weeks in warm soil.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
