Enid Lewis Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Enid Lewis') is a compact subtropical evergreen hibiscus that stays around 70cm to 80cm high and 50cm to 60cm wide, yet carries loose, open double pink flowers about 12cm to 15cm across. It blooms through the warmer months and is one of the neatest hibiscus for tight spaces. Think of it as the hibiscus for dwarf hedges and pots.
Why you'll love it
-
Small plant, big flowers. Double flowers 12cm to 15cm across sit on a bush under 80cm tall, which makes every flower count.
-
Pastel pink. A soft, sun-washed pastel pink with a relaxed, informal look that suits cottage and courtyard gardens.
-
Fits tight spots. At 50cm to 60cm wide it slots into narrow beds, pots and the front of a border.
-
Easy going. It blooms through the warmer months with little effort, as long as it is kept fed and watered.
-
Pots indoors or out. The small size suits pots and containers, inside in a bright spot or outside on a sunny patio.
Where it works best
Low flowering hedge. Plant 50cm apart in a single row for a knee-high hedge. At that spacing the 50cm to 60cm bushes touch and form a continuous band of pink.
Pots and balconies. One bush in a large pot gives a full display on a sunny balcony or patio, and the pot can come inside on cold nights.
Front of the border. Use it as an accent where taller hibiscus would block the view, beside a path or at the base of a deck.
Growing Enid Lewis Hibiscus in Australia
Position and climate. Give it a sunny spot with shelter in the warmer parts of the country. It enjoys humidity, so shelter it from strong winds and exposed sites, and protect it from frost. In colder gardens, keep it in a pot so it can come under cover.
Soil. Use free draining soil rich in organic matter that does not stay wet. For pots, add peat moss or humus to the potting mix when you plant.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well, and keep the feeding up through the warm months: Enid blooms best when fed and hydrated. Fertilise after flowering in spring.
Pruning. Prune lightly after the spring flowering to keep the bush neat. As a small plant, it needs little more than a tidy-up.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Enid Lewis Hibiscus as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Because it stays small, a tube fills its space sooner than a tall hibiscus would. Plant out or pot on in warm weather.
The grower does not always have tubes ready. When the tube here reads as sold out, the notify button emails you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
