Burgundy Beauty Photinia (Photinia x fraseri 'Burgundy Beauty') is a selection of the popular Red Robin photinia with larger leaves and brighter, deep ruby red new growth that matures to dark green. Left alone it reaches about 4m tall and wide, but clipped it makes a dense hedge at whatever height you choose. It is the photinia to pick when you want the most colour from every flush of new growth.
Why you'll love it
-
Bigger, brighter new growth. Large leaves open a glowing, deep ruby red before maturing to dark green.
-
Colour on demand. Regular clipping pushes out fresh red growth, so a hedge keeps flushing through the growing season.
-
Hedge, specimen or topiary. It works as a hedge, a single feature shrub or a clipped shape in a large tub.
-
Hardy and low fuss. It is frost hardy once established and relatively low maintenance.
-
White flowers if you want them. Left unclipped, the new shoots lengthen and carry fluffy white flowerheads.
Where it works best
Hedging and screening. Plant 1m apart in a single row. At that spacing the plants knit into a solid hedge within a few seasons, and regular clipping keeps the red new growth coming.
Specimen shrub. Allow about 4m clear in a lawn or at a corner and let it settle into its natural rounded shape.
Topiary in large tubs. Clip it into a ball or lollipop in a big container for an entry, where the red tips show up against the dark green.
Growing Burgundy Beauty Photinia in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun for the brightest colour. It is frost hardy once established and suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. In warm, humid coastal gardens leaf spot can mark older leaves, so allow airflow and water at the base rather than overhead.
Soil. Any reasonably free draining garden soil. Mulch well after planting to hold moisture and keep the roots cool.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release fertiliser twice a year, for example in early spring and again in late summer.
Pruning. Prune as required to promote new growth and maintain the shape. Clip regularly for the most red colour, or leave new shoots to lengthen if you would rather have flowerheads.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Burgundy Beauty Photinia as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Burgundy Beauty arrives as a small starter, and it grows into a hedge over a few seasons. Plant it into well mulched soil soon after it arrives and water it regularly until it has established.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?
Plant 1m apart in a single row. Closer planting does not close the gaps faster and crowds the bases.
How do I get the most red growth?
Clip regularly. Each trim encourages fresh shoots, and the new growth is the ruby red part. Leave shoots to lengthen if you want the white flowerheads instead.
Why are there spots on the older leaves?
Leaf spot is the usual cause in warm, humid weather. Improve airflow, water at the base rather than overhead, and clear fallen leaves from beneath the hedge.
