Breeze Dianella (Dianella caerulea) is a tidy 'no cane' dianella bred by Ozbreed, 600mm to 700mm high and wide. Common dianellas throw up tall, messy canes that flop over, whereas Breeze has none above ground. It establishes very fast, is about 40 per cent larger than Little Jess Dianella, and carries delicate blue and yellow flowers in spring.
Why you'll love it
-
No messy canes. It stays neat because it does not send up the tall, floppy canes of common dianellas.
-
Very fast establishing. It is about 40 per cent larger than Little Jess Dianella, so it fills in quickly.
-
Spreads to fill gaps. Underground rhizomes spread well, closing gaps and outcompeting weeds.
-
Blue and yellow spring flowers. Delicate blue and yellow flowers appear in spring above the foliage.
-
Tough and adaptable. It tolerates humidity and cold, is moderately drought tolerant and grows in a wide variety of soils.
Where it works best
Mass planting. Plant 45cm apart, about five plants per square metre (Ozbreed's range is four to six). The clumps meet, and the rhizomes close what is left.
Borders and edges. Use two to three plants per linear metre for a continuous tidy line along a path, drive or fence.
Grassy gardens and erosion control. Ozbreed recommends it as a tough groundcover for grassy gardens and for holding soil on slopes.
Growing Breeze Dianella in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, and says it tolerates humidity and cold, so it suits subtropical, temperate and Mediterranean gardens.
Soil. A wide variety of soils suits it, but avoid very poor soils. Plant into a well mulched garden, using chunky mulch if you can, and keep the crown of each plant at or above the soil, because a buried crown invites rot.
Water and feed. Water as required for 8 to 13 weeks until established, after which it is moderately drought tolerant. If required, apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Every three to eight years, cut back to a third of the height. It looks better with a cut about every three years, though how often depends on how tidy you want it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Breeze Dianella as tube stock and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available, so the tube shows as sold out when the grower has none. The notify button on this page emails you the day it is back. The 140mm pots give a faster start, and the rhizomes then do the filling in.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How many plants do I need?
Allow four to six per square metre. At 45cm spacing, 10 square metres takes about 50 plants.
What does 'no cane' mean?
Common dianellas send up tall, messy canes that flop over. Breeze does not, so the clump stays tidy.
How often should I cut it back?
Every three to eight years, to a third of its height. It looks better with a cut every three years or so.
