Black Magic Cordyline (Cordyline fruticosa 'Black Magic') is a tall, upright, broad-leaved foliage plant that grows about 1.8m high and 0.6m wide. The glossy leaves emerge green and mature to a deep purple-black. It is a dramatic backdrop for tropical and subtropical gardens and for pots, and it also does well indoors.
Why you'll love it
-
Near black foliage. Leaves start green and mature to purple-black, giving the garden one of its darkest and richest tones.
-
A slim upright form. At 0.6m wide it takes little ground, so it works in narrow beds and tight corners.
-
A backdrop for brighter plants. The dark glossy leaves make flowers and light foliage in front of them look brighter.
-
Happy in semi-shade. It grows well out of full sun, which suits verandahs, courtyards and shaded garden beds.
-
Pot and indoor ready. It is adaptable enough for tubs, borders and indoor spaces with good light.
Where it works best
Tropical and subtropical gardens. Use it as an accent plant beside broad-leaved companions such as ginger and alocasia, where its dark tones add depth.
Borders and mass plantings. Plant 60cm apart for a tall, dark screen of foliage. At that spacing the leaves overlap into a dense block of colour.
Pots, courtyards and indoors. A large pot by a pool, entry or window shows off the glossy leaves, and it can live indoors in bright light.
Growing Black Magic Cordyline in Australia
Position and climate. Plant in part shade, in a protected position. Cordylines are surprisingly hardy and worth a go in most protected areas, but this tropical type is frost tender and does best in tropical and subtropical gardens or in a pot kept under cover in colder places.
Soil. Plant in well drained soil, mulch and fertilise at planting. It is surprisingly tolerant of dry conditions, though growth is restricted when it is dry.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it establishes, and during dry spells, so the leaves stay full and glossy. Mulch to hold moisture around the roots.
Pruning. Remove dead foliage where needed. Little other pruning is required.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Black Magic Cordyline as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. New leaves emerge green and darken as they mature, so a young plant can look greener than a mature one.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why are the new leaves green?
Leaves emerge green and mature to purple-black, so a young plant looks greener than a mature one. The dark colour builds as the foliage ages.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes. It is an adaptable plant that does well in pots and indoors in good light. Keep it away from cold draughts.
Is it safe for pets?
No. Cordyline fruticosa is toxic to dogs and cats if eaten, so it is not a pet friendly plant. Keep it out of reach.
