Belgian Hybrid Yellow Clivia (Clivia miniata 'Belgian Hybrid Yellow') is a plant for dry shade under trees. It is a clumping evergreen about 50cm tall and 60cm wide, with long strappy leaves all year. In late winter and early spring it sends up strong stems of pastel yellow trumpet flowers.
Why you'll love it
-
Pastel yellow flowers. Clusters of soft yellow trumpets stand high above the leaves at the end of winter, followed by red cherry-like seedpods.
-
Handles dry shade. It grows in filtered light and tolerates dry conditions once established, under trees where few other plants will settle.
-
Evergreen strap leaves. The long green foliage looks good all year, flowers or not.
-
Good in pots and indoors. It also grows well as a potted plant and suits bright, indirect light indoors.
-
A tidy clump. It stays at 50cm by 60cm and spreads slowly, so it fits a shaded bed without crowding its neighbours.
Where it works best
Under trees and along shaded walls. Plant 50cm apart for a continuous drift of strappy foliage, with the yellow flowers rising above it each spring.
Shaded pots and verandas. A large pot on a covered veranda suits it well. Keep it out of hot afternoon sun.
Indoors. Grow it in a pot in bright, filtered light and let it spend winter in the coolest, brightest room you have.
Growing Belgian Hybrid Yellow Clivia in Australia
Position and climate. Filtered light is ideal. It will grow in dense shade but flowers less there. Protect it from frost, cold and hot afternoon sun. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and sheltered cool temperate gardens, and it is best grown in a pot where winters are cold.
Soil. Any reasonable garden soil suits it, and it copes with dry conditions once established. Reapply mulch each spring.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it settles in. Water less in the cooler months, which encourages more flowers in spring. Apply a liquid fertiliser at half the regular strength each spring.
Pruning. Remove spent flower stems to encourage more blooms. Lift and divide the clump every 3 to 4 years, or when it grows large.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Belgian Hybrid Yellow Clivia as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Clivias are slow to build a flowering clump, so expect good leaf growth first and flowers once the clump matures. Plant it in shade with mulch and it settles in without fuss.
Our tubes are supplied by our grower, so they are not always on hand. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Will it flower in deep shade?
It grows in dense shade but flowers less well there. Filtered light, such as under a high tree canopy, gives the best flower display.
How do I get more flowers?
Give it less water through the cooler months, remove spent flower stems and feed at half strength each spring. Dividing crowded clumps every 3 to 4 years also helps.
Is it toxic to pets?
Yes. Clivia is toxic if eaten, including the red berries, so plant it where pets and small children will not chew it.
