Autumn Waterfall Grevillea (Grevillea 'Autumn Waterfall') is a cascading groundcover grevillea with brush flowers that shade from burnt orange through gold to yellow, opening from late winter into spring. It stays around 80cm tall and spreads 2m to 3m wide, a neat habit that suits mass planting, erosion control and the top of a retaining wall. Despite the name, the main flowering is in winter and spring.
Why you'll love it
-
Citrus-coloured flowers. Each brush shades from orange through gold to yellow, so the plant looks lit from within in the cooler months.
-
Winter colour. Flowers appear from late winter into spring, which is when gardens need them most.
-
A waterfall habit. Branches cascade over edges, softening walls, terraces and rockeries.
-
A weed suppressor. Dense mass planting shades out weeds and holds soil, which makes it useful for erosion control.
-
Relatively hardy. It is fairly tough once established, though it prefers a warm and sunny position.
Where it works best
Mass planting. Plant 1.5m apart and mulch the gaps. The plants meet in a few seasons and form a neat, low, flowering carpet.
Banks and slopes. A mass planting gives erosion control and bank cover, and the cascading habit looks natural on a slope.
Walls, terraces and large pots. Plant at the top of a wall or terrace and let it tumble down, or grow it in a large pot where it can spill over the rim.
Growing Autumn Waterfall Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. A warm, sunny position suits it best. It is described as relatively hardy once established. No frost rating is published for it, so in frost-prone gardens give it a sunny, sheltered spot while it settles.
Soil. Well-drained soil. Mulch well to keep the roots cool and the soil moist.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas can be sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote new growth and flowering.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Autumn Waterfall Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Plants arrive small, and the first season is spent building their root systems and trailing stems. Plant through mulch and water well, and you will see the cascading habit develop over the first year or two.
Our grower supplies the tube stock, and supply is not constant. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at that moment, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Does it flower in autumn?
Despite the name, the flowers appear from late winter into spring. Autumn Waterfall describes the colours of the flowers rather than the season.
How far apart should I plant it?
About 1.5m apart for a mass planting. Each plant spreads 2m to 3m, so mulch the gaps while they fill in.
Will it suppress weeds?
In mass planting it makes a good weed suppressor, because the dense low growth shades the soil.
