Atlantis Open Jar

The Atlantis Open Jar is a large hand-made Vietnamese ceramic vessel, double-fired and finished in a textured aged glaze. It comes in two sizes, 53 x 79cm holding 200 litres and 68 x 87cm holding 260 litres. At this scale it is a piece of garden architecture first and a planter second.

Why you'll love it

• Real soil volume. 200 to 260 litres is enough root run for a small tree or a mature palm, so the planting can stay in place for years.
• Frost resistant. Double firing allows a pot this size to stay outdoors through winter in cold southern and inland gardens.
• A glaze that ages. The finish is fired into the clay and hand-applied, so no two jars match exactly.
• Immovable once placed. 58 kg and 110 kg empty. That is the point in an exposed courtyard, but placement is a one time decision.

Sizes and what fits in them

Both sizes are quoted as outside width by height.

• 53 x 79cm, 200 litres. A single advanced palm, a citrus, an olive or a clipped feature shrub. Deep enough that summer watering stays manageable.
• 68 x 87cm, 260 litres. The size for a small tree or a multi-trunk palm where you want presence at an entry or a pool surround.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Hand-made ceramic from Vietnam, double-fired, with the aged glaze over a textured body. Differences in tone across a single jar are part of the finish.

Outdoors. Frost resistant and intended to live outside permanently. Expect the glaze to keep weathering rather than hold a factory finish.

Drainage. It is drilled for drainage. Keep them clear and raise the jar on pot feet so water escapes freely. Cover each hole with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then a 50mm layer of 10mm gravel and a premium potting mix, never garden soil.

What to expect when it arrives

Jars ship empty and packed for transit, dispatched in 2 to 5 business days. Plan the lift before it lands: the 53 x 79cm size is 58 kg empty and the larger jar is 110 kg, so you want help, a trolley and a clear path. Position it, then fill and plant in place. Avoid aggressive root systems, which damage any planter. These pots are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
