Amber Blaze Grevillea (Grevillea 'Amber Blaze') is a fast-growing, low mounding native with large golden orange flowers up to 15cm long in spring and summer. It forms a dense, cascading shrub 1m to 2m high and 2m to 3m wide, with very fine feathery foliage that is tinted bronze when young. It suits cool climates through to the subtropics.
Why you'll love it
-
Huge golden orange flowers. Blooms up to 15cm long make a bold show in spring and summer, large enough to be seen from across the garden.
-
Fast and dense. It grows quickly and forms a thick mound, which makes it useful for covering ground and filling space.
-
A cascading habit. The branches arch and spill over banks, rocks and the edges of large pots.
-
Bronze new growth. Fine, feathery leaves flush bronze, adding colour between flowers.
-
Adaptable to climate. It is suited to reasonably cold temperatures through to subtropical gardens, and copes with humid summers.
Where it works best
Banks and exposed rocks. Plant 1.5m apart and let it cascade over steep banks and rock faces. Used this way it becomes a tall groundcover.
Informal hedging. Planted 1.5m apart in a row, it grows into a wide, low flowering hedge. It is a good choice where a boundary needs softening rather than blocking.
Feature shrub or large pot. A single plant makes a statement. Give it room for the 3m spread or use a large container.
Growing Amber Blaze Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Sun or part shade. It is suited from reasonably cold temperatures to subtropical climates, and it is comfortable in humid summers, so it works from cool temperate gardens through to the subtropical coast.
Soil. Well-drained clay loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH gives the best results.
Water and feed. Water regularly through the first few months. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas can be sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Cut back as required to keep it in bounds, but not too hard. Take only a modest amount from each branch.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Amber Blaze Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tubes are the economical choice for a bank or a long hedge, and the larger pots give a head start where you want cover sooner. Plants arrive small and upright and grow quickly once in the ground.
Availability of tube stock depends on our grower. When the tube shows as sold out, use the notify button on the page and we will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
