Amazing Grace Grevillea (Grevillea laurifolia 'Amazing Grace') is a low, wide-spreading native groundcover, about 30cm high but reaching up to 4m across. Dark red brush flowers appear in winter and spring above divided, ferny leaves that flush maroon bronze in the cooler months. Vigorous and tough, it carpets banks and bare ground quickly.
Why you'll love it
-
Fast cover. Vigorous growth gives quick results, and the dense mat that forms keeps weeds down.
-
Winter and spring colour. Dark red brush flowers open when many gardens have little in bloom, and birds love them.
-
Coloured foliage. The leaves are ferny and divided, with maroon bronze new growth in the cooler months.
-
Frost and drought tolerant. Once established it comes through frost and is reasonably drought hardy.
-
Holds a slope. Spreading stems bind soil on banks and batters, so it is a sound choice for erosion control.
Where it works best
Banks and slopes. Plant 2m apart across the slope. Each plant spreads up to 4m, so the gaps close over time, and mulch between plants keeps weeds out until they do.
Under larger shrubs and trees. It makes a living mulch beneath taller natives, with full sun to part shade suiting the spot.
Native garden underplanting. Use it as a low skirt around grevilleas, banksias and callistemons, where its dark flowers and bronze foliage fill the base of the planting.
Growing Amazing Grace Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Choose a position in full sun to part shade. Once established it comes through frost and is reasonably drought hardy, which suits temperate and Mediterranean gardens in the south as well as drier inland gardens.
Soil. Plant in well drained clay loams or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH.
Water and feed. Water during the first 8 to 12 weeks until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Clip back to keep it in check if required. It is fine to leave it to spread over a bank.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Amazing Grace Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10, and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tubes suit a large bank planted in numbers, while the potted packs cover ground sooner. Expect a small plant at first, with spread building over the first couple of seasons.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it?
About 2m apart for a continuous carpet. Each plant spreads up to 4m, so mulch the bare soil between them until they meet.
Will it keep weeds down?
Yes, once it forms a dense mat. Clear existing weeds before planting and mulch the gaps, and it takes over the job.
Why does grevillea need a low phosphorus fertiliser?
Grevilleas are phosphorus sensitive, so a general garden fertiliser can harm them. Use a slow release native fertiliser with phosphorus under 3 per cent when buds form.
