Alex Pink Grevillea (Grevillea 'Alex Pink') is a low, spreading native that cascades like a waterfall: a mound up to 80cm tall that spreads to about 2.5m, with fine ferny foliage and large dark pink, conical flowers. It is a grafted plant, so it copes with a wider range of soils than most groundcover grevilleas. Plant it where it can spill over a wall, a bank or the edge of a pot.
Why you'll love it
-
A cascading habit. The mounding, waterfall-style growth tumbles over walls and banks in a way upright shrubs cannot.
-
Large dark pink flowers. Vibrant flower heads sit above the foliage, with bronze-tinted new leaves adding a second layer of colour.
-
Grafted for adaptability. Joined to a robust rootstock, it grows in a wider range of soil types than ungrafted grevilleas.
-
Holds a bank. The spreading habit makes it useful for erosion control in well drained, sunny positions.
-
Food for wildlife. Grevillea flowers carry nectar, so expect honeyeaters and native bees around the plant.
Where it works best
Retaining walls and terraces. Plant at the top of a wall and let the growth cascade down. It softens hard edges and reaches about 2.5m across.
Banks and slopes. Plant 1.5m apart in full sun with good drainage. Mulch the gaps until the plants join up, and the spread holds the soil.
Feature planting and pots. A single plant makes a feature in a border. For the more creative gardener, a grafted plant can also be trained as a standard in a large pot.
Growing Alex Pink Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the longest flowering season. It tolerates drought and light frost once established, which suits warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean climates.
Soil. Well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Because the plant is grafted, it copes with a wider range of soils than many grevilleas.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas can be sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Prune as required for dense growth and more prolific flowering. Remove any leaves or shoots that appear below the graft point.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Alex Pink Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. This is a grafted plant, and a tape secures the graft point. The tape is biodegradable and should dissolve by the time the graft has healed. Plant it with the graft point above the soil, water it in and keep mulch away from the stem.
Tubes are supplied by our grower and are not always in stock. A sold out tube simply means the grower has none today, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
What does grafted mean?
The top of the plant has been joined to a more robust or adaptable rootstock. This is why Alex Pink grows in a wider range of soils than most groundcover grevilleas.
How far apart should I plant it?
About 1.5m apart for erosion control or a bank, with mulch between the plants until they meet. Each plant can reach about 2.5m across.
What fertiliser should I use?
A slow release native fertiliser with phosphorus under 3 per cent, applied when the flower buds form.
