Yucca

Yuccas give a garden instant structure. Sword shaped leaves in rosettes, on trunks or at ground level, make a strong outline against walls, gravel and softer planting, and they need almost no water or attention. This range covers the spineless yucca, which grows indoors or out, the blue beaked yucca with its spherical crown, variegated and burgundy forms, and the red yucca with its coral flower spikes. Every plant is delivered Australia wide.

How to choose a yucca

The spineless yucca (Yucca elephantipes) is the most used: soft tipped leaves on thickening trunks to about 4.5m outdoors, or held smaller in a pot for years, and it is the yucca to choose for indoors. Silver Star is its variegated form with a pale stripe down each leaf. Beaked yucca is the showpiece: a sphere of narrow blue leaves on a single trunk, slow growing to 3m and hardy to frost. Yucca desmetiana stays near 1.5m with soft leaves that turn burgundy in sun. Red yucca is a close relative rather than a true yucca: a grassy clump about 1m tall with arching coral red flower spikes through the warm months.

Where yuccas work

Full sun and drainage are all they ask. Use them in gravel and succulent gardens, around pools, beside entries, in large pots on a terrace and in hot, reflected heat positions. They take drought and coastal wind, and most handle frost. Spineless yucca also grows indoors in bright light. They are standards in architectural plants for designer gardens and among the easiest drought tolerant plants.

Planting and spacing

Plant on a slight mound in heavy soil. Give spineless yucca 1.5m to 2m of room and keep it a couple of metres from pipes and paving, because the base swells with age. Beaked yucca needs about 1.5m. In pots use a cactus and succulent mix. Water in, then only when the soil is dry.

Care basics

Remove dead lower leaves to keep the trunks clean. Tall stems of spineless yucca can be cut at any height and will reshoot below the cut; the piece you remove will root if planted. Feed lightly in spring. Indoors, water every two to three weeks and less in winter. The yucca care guide has more.

Common questions

Can yuccas grow indoors?

Spineless yucca does well indoors in a bright position. Let the mix dry out between waterings.

How fast do yuccas grow?

Spineless yucca is moderately fast, around 30cm a year in the ground. Beaked yucca is slow and takes many years to form a trunk.

Do yuccas need much water?

No. Established plants live on rainfall in most of Australia. Over watering is the usual cause of problems.

Are yucca leaves sharp?

Spineless yucca has soft leaf tips. Beaked yucca has fine pointed tips, so plant it back from paths.
