Red Paperbark

Red Paperbark (Melaleuca viridiflora) earns its place twice over: papery cream bark you can peel a sheet from, and deep red bottlebrush flowers that lorikeets find within a day of opening. Growing Red Paperbark in Australia

Will it grow in a wet or boggy spot?

Yes, better than almost anything else at this size. It comes from seasonally flooded wetlands in northern Australia and tolerates wet feet as a matter of course, yet it is equally content in ordinary garden soil.

How close to paving and pipes can I plant it?

The roots follow moisture, so keep it several metres clear of drains, service lines and paving edges. On a narrow block, plan the position carefully.

Does it flower every year?

Flowering is heaviest in the warmer months and reliable once established, usually from the second or third season in the ground. Full sun makes the biggest difference.
