White Fan Flower (Scaevola albida) is a compact native groundcover that grows 35 to 50cm high and spreads 70 to 80cm wide. Small, soft leaves carry white, fan shaped flowers from spring through summer. It establishes quickly without taking over the garden, and it is an all white form of the popular purple fan flower.
Why you'll love it
-
Fan shaped white flowers. Every flower is a half circle of white petals, and they cover the plant from spring through summer.
-
Native toughness. As an Australian native it tolerates dry conditions once it is established.
-
Stays in bounds. It establishes quickly, then spreads to 70 to 80cm without swamping its neighbours.
-
Very versatile. It works as a groundcover, a rockery plant, a slope plant and a hanging basket plant.
-
Easy to keep tidy. Prune as required to maintain tidy growth, and the plant will respond with fresh shoots.
Where it works best
Mass groundcover and slopes. Plant 60cm apart. The plants knit together within a season or two, and the dense cover helps suppress weeds.
Rockeries and walls. It spills softly over rocks and wall edges, with white flowers that brighten a rock garden.
Baskets and pots. In a sunny position a hanging basket of white fan flower blooms generously through the warmer months.
Cottage gardens. White goes with every other flower colour, so it makes a good edge beneath roses and perennials.
Growing White Fan Flower in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the most flowers. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens. Protect it from frost, especially while it is young.
Soil. Well drained soil is the main requirement. On heavy clay plant on a low mound or in a raised bed.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks. After that it tolerates dry conditions, though a drink in a heatwave keeps the flowers coming.
Pruning. Prune as required to maintain tidy growth. A light trim after the main flowering flush keeps the mat dense.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell White Fan Flower as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes are the economical choice for covering a large area, while the 140mm pots give a quicker result in a small bed or basket. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants travel upright and settle fast. Plant out soon after delivery, water in well and mulch the soil around them.
