Crassula rogersii is a small, shrubby succulent with red stems and fat, round, fuzzy green leaves. It grows about 30cm tall with a slight spreading habit, and the leaf edges turn light red in full sun. Fuzzy foliage is unusual in succulents, and this one is just as comfortable on poor, rocky ground as it is in a pot indoors.
Why you'll love it
-
Fuzzy, velvety leaves. Fat round leaves with a soft fuzz give a texture most succulents lack.
-
Red stems and edges. The stems are red, and leaf edges flush light red when they get direct sun.
-
Pale yellow flowers. Happy, settled plants produce pale yellow flowers.
-
Tough on poor ground. Very happy in rocky, sandy soil and exposed positions, and very drought tolerant once established.
-
A small shrub shape. At about 30cm with a slight spread, it fits rockeries, pots and bright indoor spots.
Where it works best
Rockeries and gravel beds. Plant 40cm apart in full sun and sharply drained soil. The red stems and fuzzy leaves stand out against pale stone.
Exposed positions. A rocky bank or open corner that burns other plants suits it, as long as the drainage is good.
Pots indoors and out. A terracotta pot of succulent mix works on a patio or in the brightest room in the house.
Growing Crassula rogersii in Australia
Position and climate. Bright sunlight gives the best colour and the most compact growth. Indoors, choose your brightest window. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, Mediterranean and arid or semi-arid gardens. Frost can damage succulent leaves, so in frosty districts grow it in a pot and bring it under cover for winter.
Soil. Gritty, free-draining soil. It does best in rocky, sandy ground. On heavy clay, plant it on a raised mound or in a pot of succulent and cactus mix.
Water and feed. Water sparingly, and only when the soil is dry to the touch. Reduce watering in winter when temperatures drop. Container plants can have a slow release fertiliser in the growing seasons.
Pruning. None needed. Trim off any leggy or damaged stems to keep the shrubby shape.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Crassula rogersii as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Our grower supplies the tube stock and supply is not constant, so the tube shows as sold out when there is none. The notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Expect a small plant that builds its shrubby shape with time and strong light.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
