Starry Jasmine (Jasminum multipartitum) is the compact, glossy leaved jasmine for gardeners who want scent without a climber that takes over. It reaches about 1.5m high and 1.5m wide, trains easily over a trellis or arch, and opens white, star shaped flowers from deep pink buds in spring.
Why you'll love it
-
Scent that carries. The white flowers are sweetly fragrant, strongest in the still air of a warm evening, so plant it beside a door, window or seat.
-
Bold, glossy leaves. The evergreen foliage is broader than most jasmines and keeps the plant handsome long after the flowers finish.
-
Compact for a climber. At around 1.5m square it suits an arch, pillar or large pot without swallowing the garden.
-
A proven garden plant. It holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, given to plants that perform well in real gardens.
Where it works best
Fences and trellises. Plant 1m apart along a fence or trellis and tie the young stems in as they lengthen. The shoots weave into a scented green screen within a couple of seasons.
Arches and pergolas. One plant at the foot of each post trains up the sides and puts the scent at head height as you walk through.
Patio pots. A large pot with a trellis keeps the perfume beside the seating, and lets gardeners in colder districts move it under cover for winter.
Loose hedges. Set 1m apart and clipped lightly after flowering, plants knit into an informal hedge.
Growing Starry Jasmine in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun or dappled shade suits it, in a sheltered spot out of cold wind. It is frost tender, so it belongs in subtropical and warm temperate gardens that stay frost free. Further south or inland, grow it in a pot and shelter it under a verandah or indoors for winter.
Soil. Free draining soil enriched with compost or other organic matter gives the best growth. Avoid low spots where water sits after rain.
Water and feed. Water deeply after planting and keep it regularly moist while it establishes, then water through dry spells. Spread mulch over the roots to hold moisture, and feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Prune as needed after flowering, in early autumn. Shorten overlong stems, thin crowded growth and tie in new shoots where you want cover.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Starry Jasmine as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tube stock is the economical way to cover a long fence, while the potted packs give you longer stems to tie in from day one. Young plants travel well, so unpack them promptly and water them in. Expect a small plant with a few stems rather than a flowering climber, and allow the first full season in the ground for the scented display to build.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is Starry Jasmine frost hardy?
No, it is frost tender. Keep it to frost free gardens, or grow it in a pot that can move under cover on cold nights. A sheltered spot against a warm wall helps in marginal districts.
How big does it get?
About 1.5m high and 1.5m wide, so it suits an arch, pillar or low trellis rather than a whole wall. For wall coverage, choose a larger climber.
Can I grow it in a pot?
Yes. Use a large pot with good drainage, a quality potting mix and a trellis for support, and water it more often than a garden plant.
