Snow-N-Summer Variegated Asiatic Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Snow-N-Summer') is a variegated evergreen groundcover and climber that stays 40cm to 50cm high and spreads 1m to 2m wide. The small pointed leaves open pink, turn white, then settle into a pattern of white, green and pink, and perfumed cream star flowers follow in spring and summer. It is also the cold hardy one, tolerating temperatures down to about -5C.
Why you'll love it
-
Three colours on one plant. New leaves are pink, then white, then patterned in white, green and pink as they age. The colour varies from plant to plant.
-
Perfumed flowers. Cream, star like flowers scent the garden in spring and summer.
-
The cold hardier star jasmine. Asiatic star jasmine is more cold tolerant than Trachelospermum jasminoides, with smaller leaves and a smaller, tidier habit.
-
Groundcover or climber. The same plant covers the ground at 40cm to 50cm high or twines up a trellis or tree trunk.
-
Fast growing. It builds colour quickly, either as a mass groundcover around larger shrubs or as quick shade over a trellis.
Where it works best
Groundcover around taller plants. Plant 60cm apart as an informal cover beneath shrubs. The pink and white foliage lights up a dark corner.
Trellises and tree trunks. It is self twining, so tie in the leaders and it climbs a trellis or trunk for quick colour.
Hanging baskets and window boxes. The stems trail over the edge of a basket or window box, and the scented flowers sit at nose height.
Growing Snow-N-Summer Variegated Asiatic Star Jasmine in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It tolerates temperatures down to about -5C, so it suits cool regions as well as tropical ones, which makes it a very adaptable variegated plant. If your winters are borderline for ordinary star jasmine, this is the safer choice.
Soil. Well drained soil. In baskets and pots use a quality potting mix.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. After that it needs only occasional watering in dry spells. A light feed of slow release fertiliser in spring supports growth.
Pruning. Prune as required to maintain a tidy appearance. It responds well to clipping. The milky sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when you prune.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Snow-N-Summer as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, with the full pink and white colouring building as the plant grows, so plant it into mulched, well drained soil and keep it watered.
Our tubes come straight from the grower and are not always available. If there are none today, the tube shows as sold out here, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How is Asiatic star jasmine different from ordinary star jasmine?
It has smaller leaves, slightly smaller scented flowers and a smaller size overall, and it is more cold tolerant than Trachelospermum jasminoides. Choose it when the ordinary type is borderline for your winters or too rambunctious.
Will it climb?
Yes. It is self twining, so it climbs a trellis or tree trunk if you train it, or spreads as a groundcover if you leave it low.
How cold can it take?
It tolerates temperatures down to about -5C, so it suits cool regions as well as tropical ones.
