Safe Haven Evergreen Ash (Fraxinus griffithii) is a seedless, non-invasive form of the evergreen ash, bred by Ozbreed. It grows up to 6m high and 4m wide, or can be clipped as low as 1.6m, with bright lime green foliage and long flowering golden yellow blooms. Use it as a hedge, a screen, a windbreak or a feature tree.
Why you'll love it
-
Seedless and non-invasive. The common evergreen ash can seed freely. Ozbreed lists this form as seedless, so there are no seedlings to pull from beds and gutters.
-
Hedge or tree. Prune it as a hedge as low as 1.6m, or let it grow into a stately tree of 6m.
-
Fresh lime green foliage. The bright colour lifts a screen and suits both formal and naturalistic gardens.
-
Long flowering golden blooms. The flowers do not attract bees, and Ozbreed lists the plant for allergy sensitive landscapes.
-
Adaptable. It endures frost, drought and humidity, and tolerates heavy soil and poor drainage.
Where it works best
Hedges and screens. For a clipped hedge, plant 1m apart. For a looser screen, plant 2m apart and let it fill towards its 4m width. Expect one to three prunes a year to hold a hedge line.
Windbreaks and street plantings. Ozbreed lists it for windbreaks and street trees. Space plants 2m apart for a windbreak, or 4m apart for a row of street trees.
Feature tree. A single plant reaches 6m high and 4m wide. Give it room and the lime green foliage becomes a focal point.
Growing Safe Haven Evergreen Ash in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. Ozbreed lists it for New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, and it endures frost, drought and humidity, so it suits subtropical to cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens.
Soil. It performs best in well drained soil, but it tolerates heavy soil and poor drainage.
Water and feed. Water weekly through the first summer, then it copes with dry spells. Fertilising boosts both growth and flower production, so apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. A hedge needs pruning one to three times a year to stay tidy, which is the price of a formal shape. Grown as a tree, it needs much less.

Common questions
Will it self seed?
Ozbreed lists Safe Haven as seedless and non-invasive, which is the main reason to choose it over the common evergreen ash.
Can I keep it small?
Yes. It can be pruned to a minimum of 1.6m, but plan on one to three prunes a year to hold it there.
Is it suitable for allergy sensitive gardens?
Ozbreed describes the golden flowers as not attracting bees, and lists the plant as potentially allergy friendly. If you have a serious pollen allergy, check with your doctor first.
