Refresh Mint (Mentha hybrid) is a super strong, classic mint bred by Ozbreed, with a powerful flavour and the bright fragrance you expect from the real thing. It forms attractive bushy growth 20cm to 30cm high and 30cm to 50cm wide, in medium to dark green leaves, and it is slower to go to flower and seed, so you keep picking for longer.
Why you'll love it
-
Powerful classic flavour. A super strong mint taste, with the fragrance that goes with it.
-
Slower to flower and seed. Plants stay leafy for longer before they put their energy into flowers.
-
Good looking. Bushy growth and medium to dark green leaves make it an attractive groundcover as well as a herb.
-
Drinks and tea. It is a wonderful addition to cool drinks and makes a calming tea, especially mixed with Lemzest Lemon Balm.
-
Easy to harvest. A clump this size gives a steady supply of fresh sprigs through the warm months.
Where it works best
Pots and containers. Mint spreads by runners, so a pot is the simplest way to keep it where you put it. Sink the pot into a bed if you want the look of a groundcover without the spread.
Contained garden beds. Plant 30cm apart in well drained, fertile soil, with a hard edge or buried barrier around the bed, and it will fill the space as a bushy groundcover.
Near the kitchen door. Plant it within easy reach of the kitchen, because it is at its best picked and used within minutes.
In the glass and the teapot. Use fresh sprigs in cool drinks, or steep a handful in hot water for tea.
Growing Refresh Mint in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. Afternoon shade helps it in hot summers. Mint is a hardy perennial. In frosty gardens the tops die back in winter and the plant reshoots in spring. Plant in spring, summer or early autumn.
Soil. Well drained, fertile soil suits it. Compost worked into the bed gives the plant the moisture holding organic matter it likes.
Water and feed. Keep the soil moist in hot summers. In spring, apply a slow release fertiliser. If you harvest heavily, plants in pots may need a light application of quick release fertiliser.
Pruning and harvest. Pick often, cutting stems back to just above a pair of leaves to keep the clump bushy. Trim off flower buds to extend the harvest, and cut the plant back hard if it looks tired in autumn or late winter.
